    ... our way back to SF by way of Highway 1, which hugs the coast until you reach Golden Gate Bridge. When I say hugs the coast, I mean the road drops off the side of a cliff and into the Pacific, and you will too if you're not a careful driver. Plus, the posted speed limits seem to be WAY higher that physically possible on these roads. Regardless, Lesley performed excellently on all those curves, and I got some amazing views ...

    ... street. The first one stopped, but it looked full so we waited for the next one. The next one was so full it didn't even stop. And the next one. And the final one, we don't know if it even arrived as we decided to walk back to the hostel, hoping we'd pick up an F train further down the line.     A bit of a rattle at 6.49am this morning a 4.0 magnitude earthquake woke us up!! An early start today as we had to pick up our tickets for Alcatraz, which we found out was for the evening trip. So we went on the Downtown hop on hop off tour it was really interesting driving around through the financial district & north beach & Chinatown. Also went through an area called "Tenderloin" it got it's name back in the prohibition days when there were bars called "speak easies" ...

    ... rested up and then headed out to do some shopping. We went to the big Westfield centre on Market St, and browsed Bloomingdales. Then up to Macy's on Union Square. In and out of some specialty shops, but nothing really caught our eye. We stopped in at a Walgreen's grocery for a few bits and pieces to tide us over for the night. A good day.
