Angkor Wat

The Angkor Wat temple complex really is a sight to behold. It is a huge complex spread over a vast area so is most easily explored by tuk tuk which you will probably arrange on your way into town with the tuk tuk/taxi driver who'll undoubtedly give you a good price from the ferry to town. On our first afternoon there we went to the main Angkor Wat temple for sunset. The following morning we went got up at 4am!! to head out to the temples for sunrise, we started at the ancient bath, Srah Srang...

Phnom Phem to Siem Reap

Today was a bright, sunny and warm day with a brief torrential shower late afternoon. Unfortunately, we spent the 6 hours after breakfast in the bus travelling from Phnom Phen to our final destination Siem Reap. The first break was in the town of Skun. Skun is, erm, famous (I can think of no better word) for its local delicacy - fried tarantulas. Once you spot them you realise that there are buckets and buckets of them and a few live ones for photo opportunities. Once in Siem Reap we had a bo...

Temples

Temples, temples, temples. Today we visited 7 temples in the Angkor complex. These ranged from the 9th century to the 13th century. The Angkor sites were all built by the kings of the Angkor empire and are spread over hundreds of square miles. Some kings were Hindu whilst others were Buddhist, so the temples are a mix of Hindu and Buddhist, The temples we visited were: Lolei Bakong Preah Ko East Mebon Preah Khan Banteay Srey Pre Rup The first three temples are the earliest (circa 9th century)...

Angkor Wat

Today started badly, it was raining hard. And today is the day we go to the best known, most impressive parts of the Angkor complex. First stop is Ta Prohm. This is one of the iconic sites - a temple overgrown by trees (it also features in the film Tomb Raider). Then it's off to Ta Keo, Banteay Kdei (originally Buddhist then Hindu) and Prasat Kravan (10th century Hindu with some ornate carvings). The final stop for our tour today is Angkor Wat. This is a 12th century city that is rather large...

From Sunday evening to Monday morning this week, for example, it has been raining for more than 12 hours on a row. Siem Reap - The temples of Angkor

Siem Reap is a town born out of the dust, a hub for the many thousands of tourists that flock to the area every year. From what I have seen so far, it's diverse range of shops and restaurants make it a unique corner of Cambodia. It has something for everyone, backpackers and holiday makers, young and old. It has changed and adapted to the growing demand of tourism and according to an Irishman I met in town, it has changed drastically since his last ...

... started late which was a negative sign.

As we were the last people to board the bus to the border between Thailand and Cambodia we had to sit at the very back which was next to the toilet. I can comfortably say that the first 10 minutes were pleasant but as this was a 4 hour bus journey it isn't saying much. First of all, sitting next to the toilet was fine but as soon as someone used it the stench from the toilet wafted in our direction and ...
