Lake Titicaca and the floating Islands

... attending to the Llamas. The lake was spectacular and went on as far as the eye could see, it could well have been a sea. It is no wonder that the Incas thought the lake had mystical powers as it is the highest navigatable lake in the world.

After lunch we got back on the boat and headed to another Island which was to be our home for the night. We were picked up by a local family and they took us to their house. It was just me and Mark so it was quite daunting ...

ANDEAN EXPLORER - CUSCO TO PUNO

... As we had over slept we enjoyed breakfast and then settled into the journey.  The journey runs from Cusco all the way to Lake Titicaca and Puno.

We drew through little villages on the way, criss-crossing the Huatanay River and always in the shadow of the Andes.  The journey flew past as we  were indulged with drink (pisco Sours), a three course meal, lunch a fashion show plus Peruvian ...

lost on Amantani

... the write way and after only a few minutes I heared a girl shouting "Alexandra". There were 3 girls, so I went closer as I thought they were the 3 girls of the host family, but finally it was the midlle aged girl and two others which were looking after the sheeps. I was very confused as I couldn't understand why they are so far away from home. So I decidet to keep with them and go after with them home as I worried about that it got dark. After a few hours the time ...

Want to stay with Jenny Juno in Puno

... last night without a reservation and managed to get 1 night but he told me a 2nd night was non possible, so I resigned myself to having to lug my backpack round to Jennys this evening to try my luck there, but lo and behold, when I got back from my trip to Uros (more later), a room miraculosly appeared and i took the monster mochilla (backpack) from storage and up into the room, so it all worked out in the end. Not sure if there´s a moral there, prob a bit of a ...

Titicaca

... the road crisscrossing at times. We catch up with a train and stop at the next crossing for a picture. We pass it again and then stop for a snack and we get a second opportunity, plus a small maintenance cart passes.
There is also a river following the road at times and at one point I spot a small flock of flamingos wading in the shallow river.
The plain is very ...

Lago Titikaka

a confession: I took the tour bus

... really drives me nuts is his tendency to repeat words and phrases unnecessarily, like saying "This is Raqchi. It is the town of Raqchi. Raqchi. Here we have an Incan temple. It was built by the Incas. In Raqchi."

We´ve seen so many hills, towns, and ranches outside the window. There are locals working the fields and washing clothes. I keep wanting to stop and take pictures of things we pass: a haystack, a painted Inca Kola ...

The Altiplano

... the highest navigable lake in the world, sitting at about 2,500ft. We started our day with our usual breakfast, and my coca tea, which by now has become part of my daily diet. We were picked up at 6:45am. One thing we noticed here, is that they are very good with time. When they tell us we will be picked up at 6:45, they will be in the hotel lobby by 6:45. We then boarded a boat, which had rather comfortable seats, which was a relief for me ...

La lluvia

Lo que pasa es que en Puno siempre llueve. I've been to Puno twice, and twice it rained at night.

I spend a day in Chucuito, which is a temple of fertility. Aparently the culture who built the temple was quite open about their sexuality, the justification of which is presented as an interesting variety of stone phallic symbols. Most of them are human-size, and all of them are rather realistic ...
