The White City

We are currently in Arequipa - the white city. Tomorrow, Sunday January 9 is our last day. We have the whole day free and we already have it all planned out. But I´ll get to that later. We arrived in Arequipa on Thursday night, very late at around 1am exhausted it was a grueling 10 hour bus ride but luckily the buses were extremely comfortable and not alot of ppl onboard so Phil and I each took up 2 seats. The buses were amazing! Still with the same bus company ORMEÑO, the seats were leather ...

Colca Canyon

2 days in the amazing Colca Canyon! The deepest canyon in the world. To think I had no idea this canyon existed until recently. I cannot believe how little tourism this place gets. We were picked up from our hotel at around 830am on Friday. Our tour guide introduced herself and pointed to a minivan we´d be travelling in along with 5 other ppl. WOW, finally we´d be on a tour with other ppl! Not that Phil and I minded being alone but it´s always nice to meet ppl travelling to the same places as...

Arequipa

We had another long trip today!! We left Nazca at 7.30am in our bus. The scenery along the way was still a desert landscape with long sandy beaches for a good while until we turned inland and reached the Andes. So far, the roads are still good. It was one of the most amazing landscapes we have ever seen. Between the dry desert mountains you can see green valleys where rice and corn are cultivated. Along the way we also passed by what looked like ghost towns. It seems like everybody has left t...

Lucky we do not stay too long :)
And we already have to get the city tour bus for the afternoon
We stop a small traditional place to get some enpanadas de carne.....muy bonitas!!!
Then we go to an amzing spot where you see the riv...

Arequipa

Having arrived at 1am from Nasca we were shattered the next morning when the tour guide came to collect us at 8am for our trip to the Colca Canyon. The drive to the canyon would take us along a route at which the highest point was 4872m. Arequipa is Peru´s second largest city and is best known for its mining of copper, gold and silver. Luis our quirky guide gave us an ´ídiots´ guide to cocoa leaves. The leaves are meant to make you ´happy´ and in the process it makes it easier to breathe at h...

The White City of the Eternal Blue Sky, Arequipa!

... br>Ingredients: 2 red bell-peppers, 2 green bell-peppers, 1 large white onion, curry powder (the purple one from tesco’s is an excellent candidate), 2 chicken fillets, salt, chilli powder, white rice and a small coconut yoghurt (200ml max, make sure it isn’t too sweet, diet should be fine).

Step2. Get your blender out!
Step3. Blend the two chopped peppers.

... corn, which we got, had huge kernels- mutant corn I call it.

We´re ready for Arequipa, a bigger and likely more cosmopolitan city. It´s also at a lower altitude so that should mean warmth and easier breathing. But who knows since little has been predictable here. The road to Arequipa has been so desolate with the hills surrounding the city purely desert. I better get used to the sight of desert since it´s all I´ll see for the next 2 weeks.

... we have also visited the very pretty Monastery of Santa Catalina, and the museum which houses Juanita, the ice princess. Juanita was a 12 year old girl who lived 550 years ago during the Incan times, and who had the unfortunate fate of being a child sacrifice to the mountain gods. Due to the sub zero temps within the glacier where she has laid since, she is almost perfectly preserved, with internal organs and all…even with food still in ...

Arequipa Convent

Most of the day we wandered around Monestario de Santa Catalina, a huge walled off convent used between 1600 and 1900 by rather privileged and pampered nuns. Each had spacious quarters, a private kitchen, and personal servants. Evening was spent once again in the magical central plaza.

The rest of this entry is from an email Nancy sent to a friend who is a Dominican brother ...
