Historical Traveler Reviews Cartier Place Suite Hotel Ottawa

      A secret worth knowing.....

      from

Originally from Ottawa, I have known the owners/builders since 1974 when the original "Cartier Towers " was established. Since moving away in 1987 I have chosen the Cartier Place Hotel as my home when I visit Ottawa, for both long and short duration stays.

The location is unbeatable. The staff are coutreous, professional and remarkably friendly . The lodgings literally HAVE NOT CHANGED... I mean they are as crisp and clean as they were when the place was built.. it doesn't seem to get tired. It has been well cared for.

The kitchens are well equipped and convenient. Any extra dinnerware, glassware or cutlery that one mighht want for entertaining, has always been instantly delivered, and requests fulfilled.

The pool and exercise room are equipped. But the neighbourhood my just entice visitors to ake a walk instead.

The price is more than reasonable.. it's downright inexpensive. For my money.. there's no other place in Ottawa with more bang for your buck, and a more welcoming "at home" atmosphere.

I am somewhat ambivalent writing this, because if it gets discovered by the ENTIRE world.. I may not be able to get a reservation.

Everthing is 1st class(the best bargain in town)

      from

I have been staying there for years, i havn't found better.

when it comes to location you can't find better, near to everthing of interest in ottawa.

Awesome location, great pool, good front staff

      from

What a great location, seconds to the hottest street in Ottawa. Parliment is only a few minutes walk.

Nice clean hotel, we loved having our own kitchen and the maids even cleaned up after us (home was never like this)

A must for any tourist or business person travelling to Ottawa

      Great Place To Stay!

      from

The Cartier Hotel Is Great! The Rooms Are Awesome, The Location Is Awesome... Everything Is Top Notch!..

The Only Complaint I Have Is Their So Called "Continental Breakfest" Is Only A Place With A Piece Of Bread.

Other Than That I'd Say It's One Of The Best Hotel's In Ottawa...

      I'd Stay There Again!

      Beautiful Location

      from

We had an excellent stay. The staff were very helpful and efficient. The rooms were clean and well laid out with a great balcony to watch the city. The restaurant was first class and a great value.

Great location for skating on canal

      from

Stayed at the Cartier Suites for 2 night in February for the Winterlude festival. The location could not have been better as it was a 2 minute walk to the canal. The suite we had had 2 bedrooms but only one small bathroom. The kitchen was reasonable well equiped and we were able to prepare some of our own meals. The pool area was clean and had lots of towels. The sauna was never hot but the jacuzzi was good. For the price we paid we were very happy with the hotel. The free hot chocolate in the lobby was a bonus when coming in from the cold carnival activities.

Check out is a big problem at this hotel. They still use metal keys and require each person to come to the counter and return the keys, this causes huge long lines at check-out time. They have yet to figure out an express check-out.

      Great Location!! Disappointing Hotel...

      from

      Rooms:

My first room assignment was in the tower. When I saw the poor quality of my room, I felt like crying due to the dingy furniture, the tacky decor and the dirty/old feel to the room. There were cracks in the walls, signs of mold near the baseboard, etc. I was there for a long term stay and knew that I wouldn't be able to handle this setting, so I asked if I could be relocated to the other part of the building.

Luckily, the person at reception was extremely nice and moved me to a non-tower room. This room was much better. The decor was not quite as tacky and the room was clean and new. There was also a nice balcony with a view of the quaint street. If you are going to stay here, make sure to get a non-tower room!! When I made my reservation over the phone, I was told that the non-tower rooms are more expensive, but that turned out to be untrue.

      Service:

I found the reception staff to be friendly and accomodating, but one thing that did annoy me was that it would sometimes take over 40 (!!) rings before they would pick up the phone line (especially at night).

Either they are understaffed, taking breaks when the boss is away, or giving priority to check-ins, check-outs. If the latter is the case, they should at least answer the phone and put the caller on hold. The other problem I had with the service was the housekeeping. I was on a lengthy stay so I wasn't on a normal cleaning schedule. Sometimes they would come daily, sometimes 2 or 3 times a week, and sometimes over a week would go by before they would show up. This unpredictability started to annoy me, so at one point I called reception for 3 days in a row and asked for my room to be cleaned. I also left a direct message with housekeeping. After all of these calls, my room was not cleaned and no one called me to explain the cleaning schedule! I was furious and called the manager. At that point, all she said was that I was on a weekly cleaning schedule and that my room would be cleaned the following Wednesday. I thought the whole thing was handled poorly, and is enough of a reason for me to never stay at this hotel again or recommend it to others. The location is great, but there are many other suite hotels in the area to choose from. Next time, I'll try one of them.

Difficult weekend from checkin to check out.

      from

We waited a long while for check in and the paperwork for our 2 rooms was inaccurately presented, causing trouble at check out. As well, some of the things we were told of via the website and the girl at the reservation desk, over the phone, were inaccurate. No cribs were available, although a playpen was. It is not the same thing. We were given nonsmoking rooms when it was confirmed that we required smoking rooms. When we asked for another set of pillows, we were promised that they would be room serviced, they never were. Breakfast with our special was included for two only. We were not told this and assumed they were free for all in the room since the web site claimed that children stayed for free. Our children were with us, we had to pay for their meals. We asked to upgrade our meals, we were not able to even though we offered to pay the difference. We were told at reservation that the breakfast included fruit. It did not. The hotel is quite a big building, which has various sets of elevators. Besides the fact that it was very busy this weekend, there were tremendous waiting times for the elevators and we felt like we were in a maze because of the confusion in the hallways and so many different hallways. The hallways were narrow and always filled with people. It was loud at night and we had difficulty sleeping on the third floor where we were because of the traffic in the hall. Unruly patrons made it difficult in the halls, the pool area and the ground floor. The receptionist had to tell some of the KIDS to stop loitering in the pool area. We were unable to park in regular parking because of the height of our vehicles and the outside parking was full. We were not told that we could have other parking priveleges until after we had paid for parking across the street. Our checkin advisor was rude when we asked about this afterwards. We travel with children and expect that a family friendly hotel would cater to our young ones and would consider beforehand the difficulties of travelling with young ones. This was not apparent here at Cartier. We travel to Ottawa every six months or so. We have never had difficulty at our accomodations elsewhere. We will not return to Cartier and do not recommend it to others.

      Fantastic!!!

      from

We loved it. The suites were like a fully equipped apartment. The balcony was very enjoyable in the evening. The staff was great, and went out of their way to please! We highly recommend it! The location was also great! We wish there was a Cartier's at everyplace we travel to!!!

      Great place to stay

      from

The hotel is located in a super spot for any traveller. Shops, restaurants, bars and tourist attractions are all in the area and easily accessible. Rooms are spacious, clean and bright with all the amenities. Still using keys for rooms with no swipe cards and parking pass card never seems to work but these were minor details. Has swimming pool, gym, games, excellent adjoining restaurant to hotel. Overall very good.

We left Montreal in a bit of a hurry on Saturday as we wanted to get to Ottowa in time to see the changing of the guard. We made it with literally only minutes to spare but were suitably impressed with the parliamentary building as we pulled up on the square. It was definitely Victorian in appearance with 'Big Ben' in the centre. The changing of …
