Sunburn & Sunglasses at South Beach

Having barely seen any of Miami yesterday we got up fairly early and went for some English breakfast at Finnagen's on Ocean Drive before buying a Ball and heading to the beach. It was easily 30 degrees by midday and having not spent long in the sun since being here it wasn't long until we got in the sea to cool off.

After a good 3 hours …

Wednesday 22nd December, New Orleans - Miami, Florida A quiet, dark motel room made it easy to sleep late - we were in no hurry and had a late checkout. We found a cafe not too far away for lunch and caught the motel shuttle bus to the airport. We watched one of our locked bags go through security and left for the departure lounge - later we picked …

... an air-boat ride. Monday the southern part of the park as we drove to the Florida Keys. Lots of alligators - within touching distance for anyone foolhardy enough - egrets, several kinds of heron, anhingas (like a cormorant but prettier - also known as snake fish, snakes, vultures, mangroves etc. The Everglades is actually a vast river, eight miles or more wide but only a foot or so deep that flows through grassland with bits of drier and dry land here and there supporting trees.

... back street. We were out in the back street waiting for Shell, of course, and Jodie had taken her scooter for a little ride up and down the back street while we waited, and suddenly Steph and I heard these MASSIVE bangs and metal clanks, then looked round to see no sign of Jodie and we immediately thought that she had completely wiped out, it sounded so bad! Luckily she managed to save the bike and herself and stay on it as she rammed into a metal ...

    THE WORST

    from anonymous

My friends and I came here for a week to celebrate a friends birthday. When we got to the Carlton hotel, the lobby looked very nice and spacious. When we go to our hotel room, it was so small, dirty, the AC didn't work, the bathroom was dirty, paint was chipping fropm the walls and the wooden floors and bed was making creeking noises. That hotel was like a shack! Luckily we got our refund back and went to The Courtyard Marriot a block away. Please don't spend your vacation here. Even if it is cheap, you can find better hotels than this for the same price.

Great Hotel and really big pool

    from anonymous

My wife and I spent two days at the Carlton hotel. The staff was great check in was smooth and there was always some one who cared working. While we were there the ice machine was not working but they had ice in the lobby area to make up for it. Rooms are new and the beds are all white. Bathroom is trendy and chic but not over done. The lobby has white carpet. I have no idea how they keep it clean but it was while we were there. The best part of the hotel is it's big pool and free beach towels and chairs. They have ice cream behind the front desk. I had a pint of Chocolate..... Nice rooms, great service and very clean.. I would stay again.

Right in the Center of It ALL

    from anonymous

I just want to say that after looking at the reviews from previous people that stayed at the hotel, I was a little nervous. I had my guards up for disappointment........and I was pleasantly surprised that I was put at ease when I arrived.

The rooms where better than average, the hotel is an older hotel, but the linen was sparkling whte....housekeeping was the best, the front desk was very helpful, even though when going to MIAMI, you have to understand that not everyone understands English so you have to be a little patient and I was, what I mean by this is some of the staff had accents due to them speaking another language but they did a great job nonetheless.

They are still working on rooms with the renovation project that they have going on put the lobby is spotless, the halls are spotless and they where there for us no matter what we need.

LOCATION: It was very busy outside the hotel, but you are one block over from SOUTH BEACH, one block over from WASHINGTON(alot of clubs are on this street) Lincoln Road is a long.......block full of shopping, reasonable prices, but believe you do need to have a little change to spend.

RESTAURANTS: We tried Jerrys Deli which is right across the street, Lazarios(Gloria Estafan-Cuban Restaurant) - on Ocean Drive, El Mexicao(great drinks-food)need to be

a bit more organized but it was the Mexican Holiday on that day, so it was pretty busy. Ocean Ten - EXCELLENT FOOD-SERVICE on Ocean Drive.

JETSKIIING is a must, it is the best experience you could have in life, I was very scared but the instructor was very good and we had a blast, this was through JET-SKI

CLUBBING....We had made love for SOBE....the guys where cool, the music was the best, the drinks where average prices, and not bad at all. We partied with them two nights and they showed mad love...THANKS. Mansion, overated and always had a line, CROBAR was closed but then open up for the Springfest afterparty and it was very expensive and had a very long line. SUITE was overrated and had a long line. There was a club called the R that was passing out flyers and offer ladies in at either 10 -20 and men 20-30 and all you can drink all night. There music was poppin and the drinks where great for one price.

PLEASE come ready to have fun and enjoy yourself, we will definately stay at the Carlton Hotel when we go back and I would recommended with out a doubt.

Great Location, get what you pay for however

    from anonymous

The price of the room does not include a local resort fee, parking is $15 a day (also not disclosed). Pool still needs work but then again who goes to the pool.

Rooms are remodeled with new AC units and are in good shape. Beds are good, clean showers, etc.. Location is excellent! Most everything in South Beach is within walking distance (Clubs restaurants, etc..). Don't expect the Ritz because at $100 a night its far from it. Book online and you save about $25 a night over their walk-in rates. Overall I would stay there again.

    Great Place to stay

    from anonymous

I just stayed at this hotel for 10 days and I absolutely loved it. The staff at reception were extremely helpful and the whole hotel had a great atmosphere. It was in an excellent location for the Winter Music Conference as it's pretty central to everything.

I had a room overlooking the pool and can assure you no-one slept there any night and the hotel was well air-conditioned, both in the lobby and in the rooms. In fact our room had both an overhead fan and an air conditioning unit.

It is true that some minor renovation work is still being done but it wasn't noisy and was all superficial stuff like new TVs in the lobby and some painting.

However, that slight negative was more than outweighed by all the positives of this hotel. The pool in particular was a great size, very clean and was a great wee sun trap for lying out during the day. It wasn't the Ritz - but considering what we paid it was more than I expected and I would definitely stay there again.

    Best Hotel in Miami Beach

    from anonymous

I stayed March 30th. Hotel is great. Brand new rooms, great staff. the GM even took my bags to my room. Mark at the front desk is really helpful. Only down side is that sometimes the parking lot was full I got a great rate becouse they are just opening. I would stay again

    Fantastic

    from anonymous

I have just returned from staying at the carlton hotel for 10 nights and i can honestly say it was excellent. The location is brilliant - two mins from the beach and close to hundreds of other amenities (the famous Jerrys diner is across the road). Yes the hotel is still being renovated but the reception area (which does differ from photo) is gorgeous and guests are put in the renovated wing.

The reception staff were never less than 110% helpful as were maid and maintenance staff and always went out of their way to make sure that you were enjoying your stay. I would definately recommend it to anyone - it also has the added bonus of a really nice pool. They provide towels and chairs for the beach if you prefer.

My friends who were staying at hotels nearby all said that if they were to come back to Miami they would stay at the carlton. I definitely will. Once it has been fully renovated it will be fantastic.

I also never seen anyone sleep by the pool!!!

    Do Not Stay Here!

    from anonymous

My friends and I stayed here for spring break 2006 and it was TERRIBLE! I am not a picky person, but the hotel had none of the amentities that it had listen on its website and looks nothing like the pictures. Although the hotel claimed to be done renovations in January, 2006, it was not even close to being finished. We were the first visitors to arrive for the spring break week and they were still putting the carpet down in our room when we got there. Our first room had no working air conditioning; we then got moved to another room, where the air conditioner was also broke, the phone and television didn't work, the sink falling off the wall, and the shower clogged. The general manager refused to listen to our unhappiness, claiming that we were only hot in our room because we were from the north, when in fact the thermometer read that it was almost 90 degrees in our room (it was 70 outside). We even had to sleep outside by the pool several nights! At the end of the trip, we were offered compensation, but it has still not been arranged, with the secretary claiming that the manager is in a meeting everytime Orbitz has called to arrange our refund!

    Hotel is Brand New

    from anonymous

Stayed here New years Eve. Great guest service. Room was clean and the location is great. They also have a huge swimming pool.

    Terrible Customer Service

    from anonymous

I was due to arrive at the Carlton Hotel on January 2nd, 2006 for the Rose Bowl. When I called to reconfirm my reservation two days prior to arrival and to ask a few general questions about the property, I was told that the hotel was closed. I had not been advised that the property wwould be closed when I had called in early December. They did not offer any reaccomodations or any compensation what-so-ever. The General Manager could have cared less that I did not have a place to stay. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
