MONTEGO BAY: FRIENDLY NATIVES AND SOUL FOOD

The Caribbean ain't cheap, but you probably already knew that. Why should a picture-postcard-perfect swimming-pool-to-the-gods only a half day from approximately one-billion North Americans and Europeans sell itself cheaply? If you're okay with $50 'budget' hotels, then you're in. That's the problem with Lonely Planet- 'budget' means different things in different countries. Of course if you want cheaper islands you can go to Indonesia. Everybody knows that. But you'd spend it all on the fligh...

S. CARIB REDUX- BROKEDOWN PALACES AND BODY COUNTS

"Full soft" means "ripe" in Caribbean English and I find myself using it frequently since I first heard it, as if softness w**e the natural state to mark the passage of time, c**tainly as opposed to hardness. And so should travel be as well as your chosen destination(s), soft and fluffy to break your inevitable fall(s). It's become my metaphor of choice. And so as I sit at home in Montego Bay waiting to catch a flight in a few days (always leave yourself snafu time), it's probably a good time...

'DYER MAKER JAH MAKE A JAMAICA ME HAPPY, 'CEP...

The change comes over me all of a sudden, almost imperceptibly and without warning. One minute everything's fine; then the next minute I'm losing it, my health, that is. First it's just a funny feeling of myself being divided and separated with an ensuing lag time between the two halves, and then a little chill and involuntary shudder as my body tries to create some artificial warmth for itself through motion. Or maybe my body is simply trying to shake it off, deny the existence of the other ...

Some great things never change!

Montego Bay, Jamaica

We were supposed to go to Puerto Limon, Costa Rica on the 24th but as we approached, the authorities closed the harbor due to severe weather and mudslides so we left the area. Later that day Capt. Thor told us that we were headed to Montego Bay. I'd been there before in the 1980s and swore I'd never go back (at that time there was a Marxist Michael Manley in charge and the US was not looked on with favor). Anyway we had to go back and once there, again I swore I'd never go back ...

Marathon Drive

Suzanne made us coffee before our taxi picked us up for the long drive back to Montego Bay. We exchanged addresses, said our goodbyes and they headed down to the beach for the day with Smiley in tow, proudly wearing her new pink flea collar. Our driver's nickname was "Simple". Similar to many of the drivers we have had here in Jamaica, he said little unless we inquired and even then, provided a minimum of ...

'Jamaican' me feel like travelling again....

... would still require some rest, and that a beach holiday shouldn't aggravate it. We stayed about halfway down Montego Bay's 'Hip Strip', which contained a few overpriced eateries, and a terrific fast-food style jerk speciality place called the 'Pork Pit'. Downtown Montego Bay is best avoided at all costs any time after 6 pm at night, for safety reasons alone, but it was pleasant enough to stroll around the city area in the daytime ...
