This entry is written in San Jose but gives a summary of my Cuban experience from the 10th-23rd April 2008. Cuba was an incredible place to visit. It is a land of contradictions but nonetheless intriguing and beautiful. I started my journey by arriving at Havana airport at 11pm at night. I was a little tentative about this but it saved me $100. I found a Taxi and got to my Casa Particular which is basically where you can stay in a locals house in a spare room. I awoke for my first day and beg...

Havana, Cuba dockerillsHumans crawl through the ashes of a forgotten world, living in the ruins and going about their business as if nothing had even happened. What did happen anyway? Who knows? Who built the original structures, magnificent and pretentious at one and the same time, the stuff of dreams and the stuff of nightmares? Official government history says it was an evil empire, bent on domination. They sucked human blood for sustenance and reduced the populace to slavery to sustain their extravagant lifesty...

... you through the night. Now that sounds like my kind of dialectical materialism. For some reason Cuba imports Gallo Beer (that's a rooster, not an Italian) from Guatemala, reflecting new realities and trade relationships (ssshhh! Don't tell Uncle) that got severely severed in 1954 the year of my birth and my taxi driver's car. I thought about trying one for old times' sake, but... naaah. Beggars here are creative, freely offering to show you their ...
Havana, Cuba hardiekHola everyone,
This top-secret correspondence comes to you from Havana Airport, Cuba. Apparently laptop computers are forbidden here and if you get caught with one it will be confiscated. So, we're in hiding, settled beneath a thick plume of cigar smoke, as we spend another night in an airport awaiting our flight back to Mexico.

... fully understood that the ride was over, and also that poor little taxi guy was in some serious trouble. We quickly made our way out of the situation and ended up walking the whole way back along the sea after all...
We were keen on taking a guided tour through the Partagas Tobacco factory but by the time we arrived there the tours were over. None the less we went into the shop to have a look around. Glad we did too because this place somewhat restored my faith ...
... thing I found really interesting was that there is no graffiti anywhere. This kind of gives you the feeling that the buildings, although old, are respected, unlike in some other cities. However, more likely, it is probably more about the society and culture of the place. I say national pesos because there are two currencies in Cuba - the national peso and the convertible peso. The convertible peso was introduced to make more money off the tourists ...
Havana, Cuba couplakiwis... catching a taxi). The caribe sea is really calm, the water was so clear. I floated around for the rest of the day. The bike ride back was even worse. Not only was it more pain, we ended up riding back in the dark....and when I say dark I mean no lights . It was nice to see the stars, but I really thought the bike was gonna flip me over in a ditch sooner or later. my hands were in pain from clutching the handle bars so tightly. Went back to the casa de la ...
Havana, Cuba hazeedayzee... me so back to the Lido. Headed out with M for a last dinner in Cuba to a nice Italian place listed in the LP. Much more expensive than in Guanabo but the pizza was crispy! Had a mojito and a rum at the bar but we were both tired and I had to get up early tomorrow so back by 930. X-Files came on while I was packing so I had to watch that so bed was actually at 1100 (plus I was a bit excited about tomorrow).
Havana, Cuba wadeoliver... more. Still, she really feels a sense of pride running her own business and says that she has more opportunities than many others, who earn between $10-30 a month. She has a really cute son called Giovanni, and like most Cuban families, she only has the one, as there is no salary supplement for having more children. Getting Mugged ... The same day I decided to walk along the seafront (the Malecon) to Old Havana, where after the initial decaying part of town the houses and ...
Havana, Cuba sheenasumaria... cuban queueing system failed however and when the bus turned up there was much confusion, shouting etc. there were twice as many people as could fit on the bus anyway so when the fuzz turned up i decided to cut my losses and scarpered! * went and bought myself some cigars and trotted to the modern art gallery which was awesome, and best of all, air conditioned! * i had a peso hot dog and ice cream for lunch then ambled home for a strategic eye close ...
