Bongiorno Italia (Arrival to Italy)

Destination 399

[Arrival from Ferry]

After a night with more than just a fiew hours of sleep on the ferry from Greece, I arrived early in the morning around 7:00am scared facing the heavily industrialized City of Brindisi! The first sight of Italy was not the most charming - hopefully to be changed soon. Therefore, after arrival and one of the quickest Immigragtion check (1 Minute), immediate departure on motorbike to explore more charming places.

The Train to Brindisi

After spending one more nite in Naples, we boarded the train and headed for Brindisi. There we would catch the overnite ferry to Corfu, Greece. I had been to Corfutown, a couple of times, but this, too, was Dennis' first time, and I was anxious to show him around.

We both thoroughly enjoyed the train ride. Intially, we were in a compartment with a young couple that made-out ...

Lecce - Italy

... We spent the next couple of days in the ´heel of the boot´, around the lovely town of Lecce with its stately squares and grand sandstone buildings, then to Otranto, with its ornate cathedrals, both highlights of the region. We crossed towards the ´ínstep of the boot´ to the village of Gallipoli, a fortified headland (virtually an island) where the fishermen in their traditional boats mended nets by the port. The ¨Heel´- a great place to spend a few days.

Ostuni - Italy

... shut between 1 and 5pm (that´s every shop, so make sure you have enough drinking water in summer), but so do all petrol stations, tourist attractions, in fact everything. Something to plan round anyway.

The villages of Alberobello and Locorotondo were just lovely, and we ended up spending the night at the historic hillside town of Ostuni, with its labrinthine alley and streets - almost like living in a maze.

Scottish exploration of Southern Italy

... to pay to get in as Cosimo had arranged for us to get in free. But at least we had contributed to the local economy. Day 5 We were all transported to the town of Lecce. It has many churches and Roman ruins. Unfortunately, the tourist information centre was closed (too early in the season?) so we were wandering around with a small map with descriptions in Italian. The churches date from the time the Spaniards occupied the area and looked lovely from the outside. They all seemed ...

trains, cars and boats...all in a day's work

... our luck, we get on the wrong train and have to switch trains in Ramini. But, this train will only take us to Bari and then we'll have to take another train from there. Ugh! Such a pain! Finally, we got on the right train and made it to Brindisi. We didn't have that much time before the ferry left for Greece though, so we were kind of panicking ...
