Cairo again

After arriving in the morning at Cairo we headed off to the Citadel. There were heaps of school children here and they all wanted to talk to us in English which was quite funny. They would come up and say Hello. My name is... what is your name? I think this must be about all they had learnt so far at school. Some could hold conversations and it was quite funny. The Citadel has a couple of mosques which we visited. The first one was one of the most impressive mosques and was designed by the sa...

Cairo

Landed in Cairo about midnight so i didn't get to see the city as i landed. Was ok though, cause the airports was very quiet. On the way to the hotel i learnt a few things about egyptian driving. 1. they don't like road rules - I'm not sure if they actually have any and just drive in the middle of the road ignoring lanes and intersections. 2. They really like to use their horns. I still can't work out the horn etiquette except maybe that you need to use it almost constantly. Still got to the...

Day One, Cairo!! Cairo Airport is an interesting introduction to the city. It's full of disused buildings and planes- more of a junkyard than anything else. What a city! I have never seen a city where no one seems to obey rules of any kind. Crossing the street is like running the gauntlet- the only way to get across is to walk and hope the cars and buses will stop! Mind you, they don't stop at lights or stick to their lanes. All you can hear all the time is horns- sometimes I think they're us...

Traffic, pyramids - holy ****!!!

Left Sinai early for a long transit to Cairo. Went via tunnel under Suez Canal but impossible to see anything from the road.

Traffic started getting heavier as we got closer to Cairo and the developed into total chaos as we reached the center - most of on the bus open mouthed as everyone cut everyone else off, no headligfhts and horns going constantly.

Got to hotel and took off to Khan al Khalili markets with some of the girls for a look. Was comlimented on my 5 wives and hassle...

THe end of one trip, the start of another...

Left the bach camp for Mt Sinai and the monastery of St. Catherine. The climb to the top for sunset (up the steps of redmption) was hot and tiring, but the view was spectacular! Very calming and quiet up there (until we got there of course :S).

The next day took the overland route to Cairo for the pyramids Solar Boat museum and sphinx (as spectacular as people imagine, ignore the people who say they are dissapointing!) and Cairo museum (very jumbled but some great exhibits including th...

And So it begins - Egypt

Today after a relatively short flight we arrived at 23.25 local time (GMT +1) into Cairo. We were suposed to be met at the airport and transferred to our hotel but there was no-one waiting for us, however we spotted someone waiting for someone who is on the same tour company as us, so spoke to that man who sorted us out and got us to our hotel so we could hit they hey before starting for proper the next day. The first thing to hit us was the driving style. While the roads have 3 or soemtimes ...

International Hamburgers

On the 5th, I arrived exhausted back in Cairo from the Red Sea, I wandered over to the American University area and walked into McDonald's...because so many restaurants are closed during Ramadan. I ordered my dinner and stood in the dining room and there was no place to sit. I looked around, the locals looked at me, looked down and it was an entirely awkward moment. Being a single woman, its highly unlikely that any men will let me share their tables and the few people sitting at their empty ...

Cairo, Egypt From Lisa: Pyramids, Camel Rides, and Abu Semble Temple... So far the trip through Egypt has been fantastic! We're sampling life in a way so TOTALLY different from anything we've known before...different foods, different customs, and amazingly open and friendly people. Julie is joining us this trip and she's brought us so much fun! Our Intrepid Tour started on Thursday with a visit to a traditional mosque where we learned about the Islamic religion of the Muslim people. Out of re...
