We rose at the crack of dawn and set out on foot around 7:10 am, the streets of Venice slick from the rains the night before, dark, and quiet. From the Rialto we grabbed a vaporetto to Venice Santa Lucia train station and picked up our tickets to Verona Porta Nuova train station.

Our plan today is to explore the Valpolicella wine hills by car with our locally born guide, Laura Cesari. The clouds hung low over the valley which made for ...

... and I were 2 of only 4 people up there!! At one o'clock the bells rang! Boy it made us jump......just lucky it wasn't an hour earlier! Back on the vaporetto to S.Marco's and we decide to find another way back to our area without going through what I call the "rat runs"........the alleyways that all the tourists use to get from S.Marco's square to Rialto Bridge. 3 nights in Venice is probably a bit much for a cram and jam adventure but we had another day here so explore it more we shall. After another dodgy hostel breaky we bussed it back in to canal country. As soon as we'd stepped off the bus we knew we had made a boo boo. You see yesterday, even after we had been informed how warm Venice is, we still packed umbrellas and jackets in our backpacks. So after sweating in tee shirts and shorts the previous day, today we had ...

Day 18 - Venice

... went early to Rialto Bridge and market. We made most of the walk last night in our search for San Marco Square. We headed back towards that area of town. This time we were able to stop and look inside the numerous churches along the route. It is beyond amazing how many churches are in such a small condensed area. They were all miniature cathedrals, grand in their own right, but would have been mere chapels of some of the churches we have seen on this ...
