Historical Traveler Reviews Capital Hill Hotel & Suites Ottawa

Great value but maybe not quite what you'd expect

    from

Usually when I read other reviews of places I've stayed here on tripadvisor.com, my experience aligns with some reviews and not at all with others. In the case of this place, I can agree with both positive and negative reviews.

First off, the hotel is relatively old and is worn around the edges. While the kitchenette and the bedroom in our room were spotless and in great shape, the bathroom was not in such condition, with some of the fixtures starting to come apart and some chips in the tiles. Still, it was clean and I didn't feel in any way that it was unsanitary, just kind of old and tired. The elevators seem old, as does the air conditioner (although it seemed to work okay). The compensation though is that the hotel is incredibly cheap, especially for its location.

Another reviewer complains about the smell in the hallways. It did seem stuffy and a bit funky in the hallway, but once inside the room, I didn't experience any unpleasant smell.

The restaurant experience was also mixed bag, with a VERY amiable and helpful waitress, but a menu that lists salad dressings that they don't really have. My food was was tasty, but cold in the middle. My partner's food, on the other hand, was reported to be just fine.

I found the staff to be very friendly and professional, but not as solicitous as I am used to in hotels. For example, when we got our car upon leaving, they drove it up to the front, but then didn't help with bags, open the car door, etc. That didn't annoy me, but it seemed kind of unusual. Yet I get the feeling that this perhaps results because guests there don't usually tip them or something, because when we went back inside to tip the man that had brought the car around then dashed back inside, he seemed rather surprised to be getting a tip.

Also, as another reviewer points out, the kitchenettes have only a microwave, a coffee maker and refrigerator, no regular oven or stove.

My only complaint is about their advertised "third-party" wireless Internet access. I presumed this meant that their wireless was managed in the hotel by a third party such as a local ISP that set it up and provides the service, which is typical of most hotels. However, when I tried to use the service ($10/day, by the way), I found that my laptop did not receive a sufficient signal in my room. Upon complaining (nicely) to the desk staff about this, they restated that it was "third-party service" and they were not responsible for its quality, but suggested that it might work better in the lobby. Later, for a brief few seconds when I was able to get sufficient signal quality to load the page for the third-party provider, I learned that they are in a "wireless zone" with all the equipment located on some other building, serving a broad area of the downtown. So it would be more accurate for them to advertise the hotel as being in a wireless zone, instead of advertising that they have third-party wireless access available in the hotel, but I don't think they're trying to be shady about it. But still, if wireless access (or Internet access of any kind) in your room is important to you, be advised that you may or may not be able to get it. You will only be able to try it out and see if it works for you upon getting to the room. If not, you're out of luck.

All in all, I think this hotel is a great value for the money, but don't expect it to be your typical suites hotel. On the plus side, you won't pay suite hotel prices and you'll be in a great location.

    Magnificent Hotel and Service

    from

What a fabulous friendly, hospitable hotel.

I came to Canada on holiday from Australia, so was looking for pleasant, convenient and affordable accomodation for a few days- and gee I found it!

    What a pleasant surprise!!

I read some other reviews on your website which really praised this hotel, so we thought we'll try it on our three day stay to Ottowa. We were three adults sharing the suite at the hotel. We only paid $45Can., each per night and the suite had two nice double beds, a beautiful dining table and chairs, a lovely little kitchenette bar fridge, and tea making facilities, an ironing board and even a hairdryer; a beautiful comfortable settee and two T.V.s. It is right in the middle of town about 5 mins walk from Parliament hill and the Houses of Parliament and within easy reach of other important places. Public transport is available at all times just outside the hotel- so it was marvellous for us as we used the public transport a lot.

Over all I rate it 10 out of 10. I have paid higher room rates in other hotels and they just don't measure up. This was the most convenient, affordable stay and the most pleasant of my whole holiday trip. I recommend it to anyone- can't find much better.

Above average Hotel, good location, rooms are nice...

    from

Stayed here in New Year's Eve. We had a nice king's size bed in our room. The washroom was nice, but the water was cold at start up when we wanted to take a shower. Then soon enough, the hot water came. This may be due to an older building with an older water system. The location is really nice, close to the Parliment building, the Bymarket, and many other attractions. Everything else was great. The price is very reasonable, better than many of the other hotels in Ottawa. Would stay again.

Great place to stay in downtown Ottawa!

    from

We took a chance and instead of staying at one of the more expensive chain hotels we tried the Capital Hill Hotel & Suites. A friend of ours had stayed there on business last fall and couldn't say enough positive things about it.

We are glad we did! The staff were very friendly and helpful, our room was big, bright and clean and offered a coffee maker, iron and hair dryer. The furniture in the room is really nice too.

The best part was that we were right downtown, within walking distance to all the major tourist attractions.

They have a restaurant in the hotel and the food was delicious and the price was really reasonable. They also have a comedy club right in the hotel which is nice if you want some entertainment but don't want to go out at night. We didn't go to the comedy club because the hotel is so close to so many shops and resturants, we just went out and explored the city.

If you want to save your money and have a really nice, clean, safe, centrally located hotel then this place is worth trying. We will definately be back.

    Location great, will return

    from

I was a guest at the Capital Hill Hotel May 1-6th for business. I read the last review I didn't know what to think my company books hotel all the time. the young lady that check me nice was very nice and helpful. the bell staff helped with bags and parking. my room was big clean, iron board, coffee maker and of course i brought my own hair dryer not needing because the room had one. my room had 2 queen size beds a leather desk chair, desk and small sitting area. I had lots of room. and no the bathroom wasn't falling down. I did eat in the rest aurent one day for breakfast and the next night for Dinner food was good and a great price. the lobby was always very busy in the morining and evening , the seem to do a lot of bus tour business. this was only my second visit to Ottawa but I will be returning twice a month now for business, and will return to the Capital Hill.

If you like a deteriorating hotel stay here!!

    from

I was planning a nice trip to Ottawa with my boyfriend. I found Capital Hill hotel & suites on the internet and everything looked very nice until we got there. I work for a suite Hotel and this Hotel is by no meens up to standards with any hotel I've ever stayed or worked in. First of all the floor our room was on smelled. Once we made it into the room there were stains all over the carpet and the walls in the bathroom were falling apart. It was disgusting. We were originally scheduled to stay for 2 night but I could barely stand to stay for one so we checked out and moved to a much nicer hotel. I would never stay there again and strongly discourage anyone else from staying aswell. Location was the only thing going for this Hotel.

Rocky start, but turned out well

    from

My family and I stayed at the Capital Hill while we were in Ottawa for the National Capital Marathon. Since all the city's hotels sell out that weekend I had reserved 2 suites months in advance (we had two families coming to Ottawa). Three days before we were booked to arrive the hotel called to tell me that they could not provide us with the suites we had booked because they had overbooked (something to do with a computer glitch) and that we would have to stay in two standard rooms instead. I was quite annoyed at first since I had specifically chosen Capital Hill for the suites, however after a couple conversations with employees of the hotel they agreed to provide us with a third standard room for no extra charge. This was a very satisfactory result for us, and aside from these initial difficulties we found the hotel quite enjoyable. It is not particularly fancy, but it is clean and the rooms are fairly spacious, and it is quite reasonably priced. The location is excellent, and the staff was helpful. I would go back there again next time I go to Ottawa.

THE Place to Stay in Downtown Ottawa

    from

I am in love with the city of Ottawa. I will be vacationing there next week for the fifth year in a row and sixth year overall.

On my first few trips, I bounced around hotels, staying at Monterrey Inn outside of the city and The Courtyard by Marriott in Byward Market. Then I found Capital Hill. This will be my third straight year staying there and I can't imagine staying anywhere else (unless I come into a boat load of money and can afford Chateau Laurier or Minto Place Suites).

The Capital Hill is a short three block walk from Parliament and is an ideal location for tourists. The staff is incredibly courteous and friendly and, through a variety of circumstances, I will be staying in a suite for the price of a room for the third year in a row.

The rooms are outstanding. Money is not wasted on elaborate decor, but the oak conference table in the suites and all of the furniture is quite nice. There is also no over-abundance of extras on the property (a restaurant and comedy club, yes ... an indoor pool, no). However, Capital Hill thrives in five important areas - location, enormous rooms, clean rooms, friendly staff, and cost. I can't imagine a better deal (based on size of rooms and location) in Ottawa. I've looked and can't find anything that compares.

While there is no full stove in the kitchenettes (which are included in the rooms as well as the suites), there is a refrigerator, toaster, microwave, sink, coffee pot, etc, and plenty of cupboard space. The hotel also provides dishes, silverware, etc. Two years ago, a friend traveling with me brought some of his own dishes and the maid washed those along with the hotel dishes.

The first time I stayed at Capital Hill, I was at first distressed at the small size of the parking lot (which is a small two level ramp). However, the employees at the hotel will make the cars fit. When arriving back at the hotel after late nights out I have trouble finding a spot, so I just drive up to the door and they figure it out. It's essentially free valet parking as needed.

The Capital Hill is THE BEST BUY in Ottawa. Unless you can afford a luxurious hotel downtown, this is THE place to stay if you want to be within walking distance of the major attractions.

    Great value, and service

    from

My friends and I recently stayed at the Capital Hill Hotel and Suites and thoroughly enjoyed it. We made the mistake of assuming they had a stove or oven in their kitchenettes and brought steaks for dinner. Upon hearing the bad news, the receptionist made a call and had our steaks cooked by the chef who also added vegetables to complete the meal. This just goes to show that they went the extra mile to make our stay enjoyable. The room also surprised us. It was very big and very comfortable. I would suggest this hotel to anyone searching for a place in the heart of Ottawa that is not looking to pay an arm and a leg.

    Great Service during blackout

    from

We recently stayed at the Capital Hill hotel during the August 14th blackout. Although we couldn't stay in our rooms the staff was extremely helpful in providing drinks and snacks in the hotel resturant. They also arranged alternate accomdation in Gatineau, Quebec. Staff members were running up the darkened stairwells retreving luggage for visitors. The short time we were in the room we found it quite large and comfortable. We will most definetly be staying there next time we are in Ottawa. C'est tres bien!
