... small walled town than a monastery. It was very rich and powerful in the 16th century and many political enemies of the Tsars were exiled here. There is a huge museum displaying sacred icons of all shapes and sizes. Interesting at first then we all became iconed-out !

From the school we were taken to the Kirillov-Belozersky Monastery for a guided walk through this huge walled complex. The monastery occupies a site on the lakes shore and ...

... monastery is a fortified complex of churches which was founded in 1397 by St Cyril. The complex is located on the banks of Lake Siverskoye. In the 12th and 13th Century, this area was extremely remote (it still is). We were told many of the men who joined the monastery walked all the way here from Moscow. Even now, one could see why the area appealed to men who sought a life of solitude and service to God.

Today, the monastery has only 4 ...
