    ... Last evening we passed through 5 locks that raised us each time. It is a fascinating procedure, the locks have been quite large, probably large enough for up to three boats our size. They are however a narrow fit and we do spend some time in the locks bouncing off the sides.

    ... monastery is a fortified complex of churches which was founded in 1397 by St Cyril. The complex is located on the banks of Lake Siverskoye. In the 12th and 13th Century, this area was extremely remote (it still is). We were told many of the men who joined the monastery walked all the way here from Moscow. Even now, one could see why the area appealed to men who sought a life of solitude and service to God.
