... they had, but didn't because apparently I'm broke. I did find a few Christmas presents though :). After that, I took the metro over to the other side of town, where the majority of the touristy stuff is. My timing was perfect...I arrived in the area just as a giant peace parade was getting started. It was undoubtedly, one of the coolest, most breathtaking things I've seen while over here. It was a massive parade, featuring people of all ages and ...

... next to the other. Hopefully the kids did not see Pooh and Mickey taking this break. I got a map at the tourist office and left the square. I found Plaza de Ville with the townhall and stayed only long enough to snap a photo.
At the end of the Calle Mayor, a cathedral large enough to give someone a heartattack stood. Its white dome and massive staircase intrigued me to enter. The Almudena Cathedral contained a unique interior. The modern stained glass ...

... I've already signed up for a phonetics class, which I'm really excited about. I think it sounds like a lot of fun. However, I am not excited about a 9:30 class that I am going to be taking. I've gotten so used to waking up around 11 here, but it might be nice to start waking up early again and getting things done earlier. I might be going to Toledo tomorrow with Katy, if not tomorrow, then hopefully Sunday or Monday, since we have Monday off. Monday is a holiday here in Madrid ...

Madrid

After a week in Rome any other city would pale but Madrid is a really nice big city (5 million) with wide boulevards, parks and plazas. The Royal Palace and surrounding garden are exceptionally impressive. There is a lot of construction around the city improving streets and plazas which will be really nice once completed. This city is really for night owls .. dinner at 10pm and clubs open until 6 am. Again great weather!

Once I got up for breakfast I met most of my friends who were in the Sahara Expedition tour few days back. We exchange stories and head out to the airport.
Hugo and I were on the same flight to Madrid and from there he was going to Valencia.
For the next few days, I spent my time biking and visiting more friends in Madrid before heading back to Calgary on April 26th, 2009.

The End and Rain in Spain

It took us over 2 and a half hours to get to Cuenca, not because of any timetabled meanderings, but rather because for some reason the driver insisted upon leaving the Autovia (motorway) at every junction, driving round its roundabout and returning to the principal route. Maybe he was waiting for the rain to stop. If so, it didn´t and we duly arived in Cuenca bus station in the midst of a downpour. After briefly ...

The Poles

The Poles Our next step was to get into Spain. We toyed with the idea of hitching, but in the end we decided to get the train to Barcelona. Once we'd found out that it was actually pretty cheap, neither of us could really throw ourselves into hitching. So that's what we did. The train took us through the mountains, and it was all rather pretty. We had been warned that the weather in Spain was much the same as in France, but when we changed trains at the border the sun ...
