... back to the hotel instead and left Edd, his dad and I to go snorkelling on our own.

Mr Belly came back 10 minutes later with bread and bottles of water and introduced us to his cousin and friend that would be taking us to the snorkelling area in his boat. He walked down to the beach with us and the swam out to the mooring to bring it to the beach for us to climb on - it looked a bit like a spider in the sea. It turned out the sea was ...

Exhausted, we tackled the initial hour's climb before we had a break, as our guide explained to us that the next section is slightly easier, until the last scramble to the top. ... family. We got chatting in the car and they were quite funny. Like a comedy double act sometimes as they pointed things of interest out to us. We saw a horse and cart and they started giggling "Lombok Ferrari" they announced. 'There's the cemetery" one said - "you can check in but you can't check out" they laughed at together. We saw a statue that they said was of a man holding a Gun dan belek - that's the large traditional island drum and many other things of interest along ...

... and neatly dressed school kids. Lombok on the other hand is edgier and poorer, which makes its delights all the sweeter. There are "Hello Misters" from every child you pass, chickens and packs of dogs by the road side, Mosques in every village, and if there isn't one there already, there's a couple of kids in the street collecting for one. What will Java and Sumatra be like we wonder? We spent last night in Candidasa at the Temple ...
