Our two night stay at Embassy Suites prior to the cruise was very nice. (We took a day to tour Sea World: separate blog). You can't beat the value--two-hour free Manager's Happy Hour in the evening and a hot breakfast buffet with made to order omelets. One cook, named Pee Wee, was especially nice and had a bright and sunny disposition for an early morning gig! We paid $110 a night (including taxes) and took advantage of two happy hours and ...

Also along the way to KSC I saw signs for helicopter tours, I look up the tour operator on the interweb and book a tour for the end of the day. Steve offers me the option of going in an air conditioned helo or an open cockpit WWII Waco Biplane, well that is a no-brainer! The KSC tour is 3.5 hours long and starts at 1230. The flight is at 1700 and is non refundable and non cheap, the drive is 45 minutes, the math is making me nervous.

He saw me from 100 yards away, and as I approach he bristled and stood tall, preparing himself for battle. It was his Delta-este assistant who broke the ice and said "he's back". The fact ...

... now, unbelievably, I was going to go to the source of all of that. Walk on the same hallowed ground, breath the same sacrosanct air!

My motel in Cocoa Beach is about 15 minutes away from Kennedy Space Center and even on the way I see many landmarks that I have read about and know intimately. I crossed a causeway bridge over the Banana River and I recall that they used to barge sections of the Saturn 5 up this waterway for stacking at the vehicle assembly building. I see ...

... in the Apollo/Saturn V Center, where bleachers were set up for rocket launch viewing. A fellow had a telescope set up, so that we could see the rocket on the launch pad clearly. Then the storm clouds moved in, and once the lightning started we were ordered off the bleachers and into the building for safety - just 10 minutes before the scheduled launch. This area in Florida is called the lightning capital. We were certain that the mission ...
