Comfortable night and a good breakfast plus a roll for lunch. We set off around 9oc and, by Lilli asking various people, found a good bike path, a former railway line, which went nearly to Krefeld, 10km from the Rhine. It took some time and more asking, to find our way through the town. We had to stop to eat as Lilli went wobbly with low sugar. The only place we could find was a car park in the Mercure Hotel. We sneaked in and had a quick picnic out of sight of ...

So I may go back and do a post for the first day/getting there, but for now, nah. So today's been a good day so far, Koda woke me up at about 12:30 (half an hour after he woke up himself). Ate our meagre breakfast, finishing our last remaining food-- muesli without milk, a few nuts and an apple. Muesli is ok with water. Very cold when we set off--gloves and parka weather. Found the track again and headed east with a tail wind, so we made good progress through farmland and little villages. Lots of horses, large and small, also miniature pigs, llamas and alpacas. The alpacas had been shorn and they looked like big poodles. At Grashoek we found a pub just opening up ...

... Schroder route promptly set off in a westerly direction. I had to produce my compass to persuade her to turn around and proceed in an easterly direction. all went well until the village of Gergen when we lost the signs when Lilli was sure we were going the wrong way so we took instead a huge loop to Helmond via Stiphout and Mierlo where we at last came across the L H 13 sign again. Stopped for a quick coffee in Lierop , after getting mixed up in a bike ...

... the polders. The first polders were claimed from the sea centuries ago, but in the last 75 years, vast areas have been diked, drained, and turned into productive farmland (at this point you might as well take a break and find a map that shows you what I am talking about). The morning was lovely, though a bit hazy. As we descended below sea level, wind towers began to appear. There are hundreds of them. While wind power has played a huge part in ...
