A town called Auxerre
... a fabulous gateway. As the heart of this town it was a great shopping/restaurant precinct. Everything beautifully maintained. We had lunch down on the Quai, at a lovely restaurant right by the water. This town is certainly one of the hlghlights. Our last day in Varzy tomorrow. My theory tested
... classical dappled light that makes everything look a little surreal. Today it was a warm 28 degrees and a little hazy, goldeny-yellow light, so even nicer. Didn't stray too far from home today - don't need to anyway, the most amazing things are quite close by. Went to two towns: Donzy and Sancerre. Fun with the horses & herb garden
... herb farm, where a husband and wife who are both biology professors have ten acres with four ponds, horses, a working donkey, and grow their own herbs and sell them to restaurants and pharmaceutical companies. It was very educational ~ we learned about edible flowers, how to grow saffron, etc.

... town were once contained within a wall (complete with battlements and arrow/archer slits), a lot of this still remains and we found ourselves walking along some narrow streets between really old buildings.
