      Relaxing Reims

... for a while ( oh dear, how sad, never mind......) We also made a quick visit to the building where the Unconditional Surrender by the Germans was signed marking the end of WW2. The room has been left intact, with many of the strategic maps and dispatches left on the walls. The rest of our time was spent strolling arm in arm through the wide and airy streets, ducking into the occasional boutique or boulangerie and just relaxing as you should when in ...

... We had very, very tasty snails in the first course, then Paul had rabbit and I had lamb in the second course (also very tasty). Paul had a cheese plate, with a selection of sheep, goat, and cow cheeses. I had a dessert: bananas and chocolate in a filo dough purse. I thought it was good (not great), but Paul didn't like the plantain-style banana. We also had a bottle of excellent Beaujolais. Lovely meal, about three hours of good food and good company. Then back to the room for ...

We emerged from the hotel soon after 08:00 this morning - the tandems (and solo bike) were duly extracted from the little lock-up within the hotel garage and we were away. The quality of the towpath surface was a bit variable so we ducked on and off it, using roads near the canal where the towpath surface was poor. The main section of towpath for us was the section through Reims ...

Three Gothic Cathedrals in a day

... a third Gothic Cathedral for the day. We just had a very nice meal out al fresco opposite the cathedral. Could have been very touristy, but not here in this quiet, smaller hilltop town. The "menu" (ie the fixed price, fixed selection) is attached with pics of the dishes just to make you jealous. That rum baba in a glass, floating in white rum, infused with vanilla pods, added at the table, was ...

... After lunch, we went to the Reims cathedral which is where the kings and queens of France were all crowned. The cathedral was impressive both on the outside and inside. There are over 2,000 statues in this cathedral which is amazing.

We also went and saw the Mars Gate which is the only remaining gate built in the 3rd century giving access to the a Roman city. Then after we went to the Museum of Surrender where the Germans surrendered for VE ...
