... with a French children's rights NGO called Terre des Hommes, one with the Director of the International Peace Bureau, and one that was with a friend and her friend who have started an NGO for street children in Uganda and have done quite a bit of hands on research of Ugandan schools. This week I have three more, one from a child labor specialist at the ILO, one with a graduate professor of children's rights and education, and one ...

Friends and Fondue

... delicious! Accompany it will chilled white wine, dry but not too dry (in Switzerland the Fendant wine is most often served with fondue) and it’s very convivial. Conversation flows naturally.

Our conversation was fascinating and varied: the best fondue mixes, the history of Switzerland, and jokes about cantons. Appenzell in the north-east of Switzerland, for example, is home to a smaller people, so joke about them often center in their diminutive ...

Arrival in Switzerland

... at the immigration desks. My suitcase arrived in good shape, and I walked through customs to where Jean-Pierre Vernaud was waiting for me in the arrival area. We walked over to the underground rail station in the airport and bought my ticket, allowing us just enough time to get in the train to Geneva Cornavin station (the central station). There we had about a fifteen minute wait for the omnibus train that headed north toward Lausanne. The few minutes to our stop were pleasant ...

Socialized Medicine Ain't Cheap

... desk where the receptionist spoke a little English and handed me a registration that, thankfully, was in English. It was very brief and mainly focused upon payment. No health info. was asked. I returned it to her and she informed me that my wait would be around 1 hr. I then proceeded to sit in a chair that afforded me the greatest amount of personal space available, as I didn't want to catch anything from the other ...

Conor and Diane!

From there we went to Geneva to meet up with Conor and Diane. Since we got there so early, Jon and I started touring the city and randomly ran into them, and Conor’s parents, at the UN building. So we toured the city with them, went to the biggest flee market selling all sorts of random sutff (mostly garbage). WE also ...

That's about it

We sadly left Chamonix and vowed to return there in the winter, and drove to Annecy. Annecy was kind of a repeat of Prague, beautiful old city, on the water, with canals... we were kind of sick of that scene by then. They are applying to have the 2018 Olympics there, with the ski events at Mont Blanc. It would be a nice venue for sure.

Country n. 35, je pense

Today I went to France for the first time in my life. I regularly get, you've never been to Paris? Or, howcome you've never been to France? I often don't know how to answer this question. I mean, there are hundreds of countries I've never been to. France was one of them. - So, how do you like France? - It's a lot like Switzerland. Oh... this response generated a reaction. As did, - So, is there ...
