We Remember

... we made our way up the hill to the castle. There is a great view of Dieppe form the top and we could see their two huge churches and the stunning coast. After making friends with a cat, who we named Cookie Dough and declared guardian of the castle, we explored a little more before making our way back to the car and on to Rouen.

Are you getting exhausted by all the jumping from place to place because we sure are!! Hehe!

... several drops of Christs blood, then discovered the secret recipe for the liquor Benedictine and their fortunes and future was secure. Me thinks they had been experimenting with this recipe (or LSD) when stumbling over a piece of drift wood... the lord works in mysterious ways :p Anyway the monks built quite a spectacular palace and this is the main reason to come here as well as to try the famed liqueur.

Day 2

Drove from Lille to cute little town that we almost missed as Monday mornings the whole country is shut and a town with 2 bars and a post office is easy to miss. But with a bit of luck (ok, and help from the post office) we found our b&b. We both found it a bit odd though in a town with max 30 named streets the postal workers had to look up the road of our ...

A Very Emotional Day

Today was a huge day for all of us as we remembered the fateful day in 1942 when Canadians landed at Dieppe. It was August 19th and the plan to gain a foothold on the continent had been "fiddled away" to become a quick raid. There were several objectives for the raid...but it was doomed from the start. It was meant to be a surprise (they were to land under cover of darkness) but there seems to be some question as to just how much of a surprise it was ...

stop-over to hit the Hypermarché

Peaceful drive of only 458 miles except for the roadworks in Caen with the "Deviation" signs going round in circles eventually managed to bypass these and get to the camp site around 6pm instead of 4pm

June 30, Tuesday

Dieppe is where we are headed. We go into town to the city centre and the beach area. We look around to find something for the war, but can't find anything. After walking along the beach we leave and see a few plaques on a, now restaurant, building. There is nothing here for Canada. We see a plaque in memory of 3 Americans who fought with the Canadian troups. We decide to leave and maybe find an information centre. We notice the ...

J'arrive en France!

I sailed from Newhaven on the 'Seven Sisters' under blue skies and with a fair wind to push us across La Manche (or the English Channel for the Brits :-) A seagull had pooped on my bike prior to boarding and I hoped this was a good omen for the trip. But as we neared the French coast a thick fog descended, which slowed us down for a while. In spite of the fog we disembarked on time and I climbed aboard my ...

From the cliffs of Etretat to the beach of Dieppe

Driving alongside the hilly coast, the scenery changed with every curve in the road, sometimes showing immense green fields uninterrupted for miles, other times displaying the deep blue of the English Channel interspersed with the white foam of distant waves. We drove into the small resort town of Etretat, famous for the artists it has attracted over the years. Eugène Boudin, Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet came here to paint. Author ...

Dieppe, la normandie

Always traveling from Paris, we wanted to visit a coastal town where the Normandy landings had taken place, and we chose Dieppe because we could cross the English Channel as well. In fact, there are daily ferries going from Dieppe to Newhaven and coming back. We spent 2 nights sleeping outdoor on the cliffs of Dieppe. Our first night, we slept close to the edge of a high cliff. That night was very stormy. We ...

... first I left Dieppe by afternoon after saying the farewell to everyone and I got picked all the way to Honfleur while crossing the Normandy bridge. Quite Impressive! I visited Honfleur the whole day and napped on the city park and ate my lunch. Honfleur is a really great town, clean and typical with a great view on the bridge. I called Dominic and talk to Frank Gignac. Another nice thing is that its from Honfleur that Champlain left to found Quebec city as well as my ...
