Day 24 - Paringa to Mildura

... has invested a bit in its road infrastructure. As soon as we crossed the border into Victoria (about 20kms into the ride), the shoulders were wide and quite smooth, which mean't we could stay on the shoulder in single file all the way to Mildura, thus letting the trucks, caravans and cars go merrily by without too much danger to us riders.

The landscape was quite flat, in what ...

Silverton to Mildura

After another look at Mad Max's Car and Silverton we headed south through the saltbush to Mildura. We were all very excited when we hit border into Victoria. We set up camp on the banks of the very picturesque Murray River and went into town to see a lock and a paddleboat.

Our first few days

... our version of the crack of dawn (roughly 10.00), stopping in Wedderburn to fire up the gas stove for coffee and a slice of Maureen. (Carrie's famous fruitcake is named for the author of the original recipe and has accompanied us on many trips over the years.)

By lunchtime we had reached Wycheproof, but with happy memories of too much cake, no one felt much like eating. Instead we turned to Mount ...

Final week in Aus

... got involved in the dressups and looked great. Mind you it was amazing that we made it to tea as Mums insane driving continued throughout the day. Thursday the last day at home involved repacking for the 3rd time, heading to the cinema to see the luke warm movie 'The proposal' and Mum making a collage at the table at Office works while I created a coloured masterpiece of the world dressed as a pirate.
... is rather dry). Once it got dark, the nightlife came out, spiders that glisten in the beam of your torch and a scorpion that is larger than life an inch long. Fortunately they stayed out of the caravan and the car. It was a lovely quiet campsite with lots of serenity.

The misery of Mildura

... After a few minutes he got up still looking quite drunk and they set out half an hour late only after having an argument of who was going to drive ( or rather if any of them should have). Unfortunately one of the drinkers lived in our room. He was from Dublin and was nice enough but would come in every night drunk and make noise and sometimes even turn on the light. And that wasn't his major fault, on the first night he snored really loudly and told ...

... the fruit ban the lady explained they were very harsh if any was found in your possesion as an elderly lady had 1/2 a tomato in her van & was fined 200 dollars so she told us we would be ok until we had driven through the next town mildura, but before we arrived there were bins everywhere so we sat in a layby stuffing grapes peaches 3 big bananas & an orange all healthy i hear you all say !! so stuart decided not to have his pervebile sausage roll.

... long day. Finally I get to Mildura at 10.15pm local time and, for the price of a hot dog, find the location of Lemon Avenue, and my accomodation. The door code works, the key is where I have been told, and I have a big windowless room with two beds, TV and fridge. There's not a soul around. I have a whole HOSTEL to myself it seems. And I thought it was fruit picking season. No beer today, a first, straight to bed. L

... only a$66 for a good en-suite room. We chose the place because it was, you guessed it, only a short walk away from the local RSL club, where a jug of ale was a$10 and a great Bistro meal was a$35. The food in Australia is so much better than we expected, dare we say it, better than in the UK.

Nullarbor Roadhouse to the NSW border

... cooked on a gas cannister stove. The service station at penong offers relatively cheaper fuel. Nearer the end of the Nullarbor we had our next stop at a roadside oyster bar just before Ceduna township. We sat down to a dozen of the biggest, juiciest and tastiest oysters to be had - all for $6.00. We got a dozen takeaway and she threw in an extra dozen as well. Seating is great, either inside on the bench tables or on ...
