... justify coats and jackets!

We then stumbled onto the Marche` Belleville - a massive long market that snakes along the Blvd de Belleville - and what a market it was! Smells and noises filled the air, grocers trying to tempt you with their wares, spices, clothes, butchers, fishmongers, all in one space. The market continues all the way to the Cemetiere de Pere Lachaise - with multiple notable tentants - such as Chopin, Oscar Wilde and of ...

Family!

... us to his house where he lives with Aunty Cath and my cousin Jack. Before long our eyes were falling and we were off to bed for a 4 hour nap! Once we were up we went and bvisited mum's other brother Danny, his wife Margaret and my cousin Frank. Back home and my cousin Natalie and her little one Archie had arrived. Frank swung past with my other cousin Danny (who tried to persuade us to a halloween do at the rugby club!) but to no avail ...

New Beginnings

... way up and down the very narrow river. About half the "drivers"/gondaliers were experienced, but half were not. It was not uncommon to hear a "crack" and find that one of the drivers had forgotten to lower his big long-stick-like paddle, and it hit one of the low bridges and fell out of his hands. Many gently broadsided others, others not-so-gently.... Somehow everyone managed to stay balanced and dry. We had a history lesson while we lay back ...

Escape from the UK

... his tent for me on the last night. Unfortunately I lost my camera so there are no photos of this part of the trip. The remainder of my time in the USA was spent visiting relaitves in San Francisco, Fresno and San Francisco. I took the Amtrack to the last two and found the service to be variable. The booking online was easy but each journey included a bus journey. These buses were much very comfortable and much better than ...

Gravity is workin' against me

... seeing such a blatantly American memorial in the middle of England! After that we headed off to eat lunch. We ate in this huge dining hall at Gonville and Caius College. It was this very fancy meal where they brought all the different courses out and we had some amazing roast pork chops and all kinds of other food. One of the other girls and I were geeking out because we felt like we were in Harry Potter! We kept expecting food to magically appear on the tables and we ...

Goodbye river

... and abandoned, a few ducks puttering about in the mud, metres below the water line. It occurred to me that perhaps this was normal - perhaps regularly in winter nasty weather comes along and decimates the River Cam. I've been lulled into a sense of familiarity with Cambridge over the last couple of months - perhaps there's still much to learn. Or perhaps with the changing climate it's something long-time residents will have to confront as well ...

At last I get to move that bloody map pin!

... known much about what I am looking at. We looked at the town before the University was established (in 1284). The Romans, Anglo Saxons, Normans were all here long before the uni. Fascinating. So...that was enough of the cerebral stuff. I am going shopping today. May walk PAST the library. I am sure just breathing the air here is making me smarter and somehow the thesis is writing itself. (PS. Happy, happy, joy, joy. My friends have a shower!!!!!!!!!!!)
