    ... on the Kolona Harbour, near the tower and lighthouse of St. Nicholas. The church was beautiful inside and had large chandelier s in it.     ... which was a pretty spot. Nearby was the Metropolitan Church of Annunciation, situated on the Kolona Harbour near the tower & lighthouse of St. Nicholas. The church was beautiful inside with a large chandelier in it.     ... as far back as the Bronze Age.

    The main square holds the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo. Shops and homes covered the hillside alongside the temple.

    A reservoir has been uncovered, big enough to have served 400 families.

    What really fascinates me are columns and stones that still are engraved with Greek writings. I wish we could get translations to see what these residents ...

    ... around the harbor to see some old windmills, and a lighthouse. We found an empty boat slip in the harbor and sat to enjoy the view for a while. Nice to enjoy a laid back day for a change. After setting up the tripod for some photos it was time to start back toward home. Wow, a whole 15 minute walk. However, we got sidetracked at another city gate. This one was for traffic.     Rhodes is the most important island in the group known as the Dodecanese or South Sporades. It is also the most easterly island of the Aegean Sea.

    In Greek mythology, Rhodes was created by the sun god and a sea nymph. According to Homer, the first inhabitants were Dorian Greeks. A fortress was built and the city of Rhodes was founded. A huge bronze sculpture, Colossus, was built at the entrance to the harbour but was bought down in an earthquake in 224 BC.
