Day 16 - The Monte Carlo

A travel blog entry by stephroberts

... Cannes the kebab place was closed :( craving one we looked up on the Internet for kebab places in Cannes. We enjoyed our kebabs and marvelled at the curios sauce that had a taste that wasn't quite recognisable. We headed back down to the beach waking all the way along the shore the pathway was lit up by rainbow lights that danced in patterns on the floor! We sat on the wall facing the water making shadows with the light on our backs. Then back to the hotel and ...

... club, although full of rich
young adults/middle aged people, not quite the average student night I am used
to at max £2.50 a drink...this was 16€ a drink!!!! Afterwards we
walked along the beach with crystal clear water and eventually found a taxi (40
mins later) to take us home. Tired, we slept in until 1pm and got up just in
time for me to catch my train at 3pm. Although short but sweet it was a great
getaway and nice to see a good friend.

... journey: We visited the cemetery where Marc Chagall is buried and placed small stones on his grave. Then Annie and Paula went to the little tourist office, just across from the estate agent’s where we found La Golondrina. The office was able to supply Annie with the phone number of her dear friend, the artist and St Paul fixture Nanou. Since Nanou speaks almost no English, Paula translated. They made arrangements for us to visit Nanou at her house and studio the next ...

... arrival at the restaurant we were greeted by our waitress of the previous evening holding Lizzie’s jumper and smiling broadly at us. Now that is great service.

Another fine dinner, in fact way too much. The best result was Lindsay’s who was desperate for a steak hache which appeared only on the kids menu. I asked our waitress for maybe two children's meals and she disappeared to confer with the kitchen. Within a minute she returned with a ...

After Monaco it was off to Nice to enjoy more of the Cote D'Azur's treasures. We did not have a long itinerary set for Nice, rather 2 main areas we wanted to visit. These were the Vieux Nice and the coastal promenade. The first stop was the Vieux Nice which has some amazing old streets crammed with shops, restaurants and cafes. There is a great atmosphere there and everyone there will ...

    Such a lovely place!!!

    from anonymous

California's two steps from the sea and in a quite area with an elegant garden and just white flowers small lights in the trees at night.

So romantic to sit there and enjoy the pool, the Very clean hotel and the excellent service.

    We will come back!!

This has been my choice in Cannes for the past 8 years!

    from anonymous

I am lucky enough to have a job that brings me to Cannes twice a year. While people fight to get rooms at the overpriced Majestic or Carlton, I always choose to stay in this very special hotel. Nadia, who runs California's Hotel, is the heart and soul of the place, and don't be surprised if Mr. Faure, the owner, himself comes to collect you from the airport when you book a transfer. Everything is about quality here - from the beds in the rooms (the best sleep you will ever have) to the breakfasts (the freshest pastries in Cannes). I am so jealous of the people who can stay here for holidays because it is a wonderful place - truly a home away from home.

    It's always a nice stay!!

I love the charming California's Hotel, I do love the great service, I still love going there twice a year.

    Great Hotel, Great Staff

    from anonymous

We stayed in the Romantic such a beautiful room with a private terrace overlooking the garden and the pool.

My mother was sick and on the spot the Doctor was here (what a service! ).

The manager Nadia and the owner Claude took us in the hotel Limo car for blood tests hospital...

All this was free and upon her return, she had a welcome gift and flowers in the room ! So Exceptional.

    Fantastic stay

I stayed there with my partner for the ITLM show last week and it is great, the hotel staff is wonderful and go out of their way to help you. The rooms are clean but they might do better on the breakfast. But overall it was great. I will be staying there again.

    Home away from home

Hotel Californias is a completly charming little hotel one block off the croisette. Our room was not overly large but totally comfortable and very charmingly decorated. The pool area is divine, a great place to unwind after a day of being a tourist. The absolute best part of this hotel is it's manager, Nadia. She always thinks of her guests first, she will try to accomodate any request. Either her or the owner were always able to run us to the train station for one of our many day trips along the Riveria. We very much enjoyed our 12 days at the Californias and we would not hesitate to recommend Nadia and her staff.

Great when booking, not so good after that!

    from Lord-Owen

The pre stay booking was great, quick replies and polite emails. When arrived, all seemed fine until we went to the room. You could not swing a mouse in it! We were told when we booked that we would have a discounted rate of 20 euros per night as an offer. When we checked the standard tariff we were charged the normal rate but were told a higher rate to start with and it looked as if we were getting a deal....beware! We upgraded our room for the second and third night as the standard room was uninhabitable, the bedroom was tiny and the bathroom minute. You couldn't even sit on the loo without bending your legs away from the wall! No offer was made for these nights...i wonder why? The airconditioning didn't work (i think this was because it was April and they don't allow it on until the warmer months! It was a very warm couple of days!). When we checked out, there were no pleasentries and we felt disappointed. Will not return.

    Fantastic Find

    from clobella

Stayed at California's for a week just as it had been awarded a further star, thus becoming four star. I had booked this by internet and Nadia, the manageress was very efficient returning e mails immediately. Upon arrival a plant was brought to our room in welcome. The bedroom was a reasonable size, well decorated and designed with plenty of wardrobe space and excellent bathroom. Lovely view over pretty pool area plus a view of the sea. Breakfasts were good and taken on patio at front of hotel. Nadia was a presence throughout our stay - she booked tickets for us to the jazz festival and arranged for them to be credited when it was cancelled due to bad weather; she recommended great restaurants and arranged the bookings and even told me where to go for handbags!! Last but not least we were driven to a restaurant on one occasion so that we could then enjoy the walk back. Californias is at one end of the front by the railway which is not really a problem and it really was a great find at a good price. Nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended.

Home Away From Home, In Cannes

    from anonymous

Having stayed here for about 12 days during each of several Cannes film markets, I really appreciated the home-away-from-home atmosphere. The warmth is provided largely by the wonderful, truly caring manager Nadia. Breakfast is made-to-order, and the hotel owner will himself provide rides to/from the airport (for a reasonable charge) and into town.

The hotel is located a short walk from the main strip.

Although the rooms are modest, they are comfortable. The outdoor pool and patio are lovely. Highly recommended!
