We had to leave Kampot at some time and after a week of doing very little we grudgingly hired a taxi to take us to Phnom Penh. Our previous experiences of the city had been just bus stations, which are not always the nicest of places (e.g. Perth, Scotland), but the little we have seen of the rest of the city has been great.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia andylaraHi Everybody! I just got done watching the 3rd Kerry/Bush debate live in Phnom Penh at 9 am on Thursday morning. I arrived here yesterday around noon. The highway from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh has greatly improved in the last 2 years. Previously, the bus trip had taken 8-10 hours. Now it takes 5 hours, including a stop in Kompong Thom for lunch. So it takes the same amount of time as the boat and costs about 5 times less. When I arrived in Phnom Penh, I learned that there was some kind of frea...
Phnom Penh, Cambodia houseofwanushGreetings I had an awesome weekend in Ratanakiri. I wish I could have stayed longer, but at the rate those flights get delayed and cancelled, I couldn't risk it. It was just an hour's flight from Phnom Penh with some nice views along the way. The runway in Ratanakiri was dirt, but flatter dirt than the rest of the roads up there. They've got a special crew that rides out onto the runway before the planes land to clear off any livestock that may have strayed onto the runway. I stayed at Yaklom...

Phnom Penh, Cambodia hantulaut... with hitler easily. there was a horrific stupa full with skulls met on entry. they were the skeletons of bodies they'd found in the mass graves. men , women and children buried alive, executed then buried, and the one that really gets me, beaten against trees until they were dead and then buried in mass graves. it was herendous. everyone was so quiet as they walked around and read about the appalling behaviour of ...

Phnom Penh, Cambodia -mari-... and books) and who won't take no for an answer. Today was a necessary but very discomforting experience. We had decided that we ought to respect the fact that Cambodia has gone through a lot of **** (to put it lightly) in the last 40 years, and so should go to the Killing fields and S-21 to be informed on it and not ignore the historical sides to the places we are visiting. If you don't know already, and I didn't, look up the Khmer Rouge on ...
Phnom Penh, Cambodia jess_a88Back to Alice. We overslept which meant a pretty jam-packed afternoon. First we went to the Vietnamese Embassy to get visas for the departure the next day (as last minute as ever!). The Embassy was actually closed, but for a little extra backshish the security guard managed to magic us some visas. We then went to S-21 where Pol Pot's regime held and tortured their detainees: peasants, interlectuals and anyone who ...
