... them by the Arabs and accepted by them as to escape the crazed rule of the upper class, the Nairs. It was not far down the path before I heard a strange hooting and hollering, and because I was looking quite confused, they explained to me that anyone of the lower class had to do so in order to alert others of their awareness. Thus, the Nairs, would then be able to tell the lower class to get out of their way. The enormous separation ...

Still feeling a little ropey, I secured a spot on the local bus from Manathavady to Calicut next to the window, and settled in for the 4 hour journey.

The route involved coming down from the high regions of Wayanad to the lower lands of coastal Kerala. This necessitated getting down a couple of mountain sides with more hairpins than your average Claire's Accessories.

Buffet Breakfasts and Shopping Malls in Calicut

Although we thought we were catching a single bus to Kozhikode (named Calicut by the English- slightly easier to pronounce) what we got was a three bus saga. At random intervals the Keralans would push and squeeze past us to run onto a new bus and grab a seat. Most sneakily slid past us, without indicating that there was a change in buses and one woman even pulled Jasmine back off a bus so her friend could push past. Needless to say we never quite got a seat.

... overdoing it to rudeness. Motorbikes went past uncomfortably slowly to check us out, trying to talk to us when we needed to be focussing on trucks bearing down in us. It is a really draining experience being so watched by everyone but when you talk to the individuals it makes it all better. The two young boy scouts were wonderful, so smart in full uniform with bikes really accessorised. The last 10 miles into town were hard. At the end of 5 hours ...
