Flew up to Cairns, arrived to a relatively empty city and were surprised to have got such good prices to stay at one of the top hotels in town. The luxury was super and on arrival and finding that we had actually arrived in the low season on account of the sweltering humidity and the fact that swimming is a no with all the Box Jellyfish. We were not deterred and made the most of our time by checking out all the diving and tour operators. We met a lovely lady called Carmen who owns a travel ag...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia kingsandemsOn account of the storms and bad visibility we decided to give an expensive 4 day live-aboard to the northern parts of the GBR a skip and instead waited a few extra days till the weather cleared then took a day trip which was visiting one of the outer reefs which is reputed as having some super diving. The crew was excited as they had been unable to get out to these exposed reefs for many weeks due to bad weather and visibility. The boat was called TUSA and it is a large Cat, which takes snor...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia kingsandemsWell, here we are. Covered in dirt, grime, dust and sweat. We've been eaten alive by mozzies, sand flies and green-bum ants and with our hairy legs, bushy eyebrows and well, we'll stop there but you get the hint...the line between being feminine and being a cave woman has been seriously blurred. Not only that, we've survived millions of corrugations, bogs and flat tyres but, we have had the most amazing journey through the Cape York Peninsula to the "tip" of mainland Australia, aka the last f...

Cairns, Queensland, Australia karendixon... off at Noosa - which was a very pretty beach town. Arrived at Surfer's and met up with one of our friends who lives there - Suzie from the outback - and went out with her in a big group! It was wicked.
9th June - Went to the beach with everyone and chilled out. Swam a little bit but it was little bit chilly so sunbathed most of the time. Went to a seafood restaurant which was wicked. Then that evening it was the Dracula's Comedy evening. This was the ...
Cairns, Queensland, Australia amyboxshall... gather our stuff and start to mentally change focus to scuba diving. To our disbelief Lennart has forgotten to bring the underwaterhousing for the camera and we run around the city to find the right model. As sweat starts pooring down the spine we give in and rent an u/w camera. As TAKA ships out from Cairns harbour an hour of so later we are onboard, including all our gear. We travel in notherly direction all night to arrive at the ...

It was so warm I just picked neither, I guess it wouldn't have been the best decision if something had actually stung me! It rained a lot but what difference does it make underwater, right? We also had the opportunity to fly in a helicopter! So many of my life goals were accomplished in the one week!
Cairns, Queensland, Australia alifebeinglived... GBR, not to mention some cool photos!

The first night we there we ate at a restaurant called Boydy’s. The food was decent enough, but what caught my eye was a sign in the front advertising the Boydy’s challenge: a 48oz steak dinner complete with fries and salad. The challenge was if you were able to eat it in under an hour you’d win a free beer. Now that wasn’t quite enough to entice my competitive spirit, but when I saw that there was a time record ...
Cairns, Australia brandon_t... to Kuranda you get to experience a sleepy town set to cater to tourists alone it appears. We looked in some shops, bought some goods and made our way back to the train station. We rode the Kuranda train back to Cairns. It's an interesting journey through twisting winding track through at least a dozen tunnels and over several hair raising bridges and cliffs. At one point it passes the Barron River gorge which drops down far below. Australia is in the midst of a ...

Despite the snack stops, I endeavoured to keep up. The only bummer was the rain, which I hadn't expected and was ruddy cheesed off about. In the end, you either wore a fetching yellow plastic poncho or got wet. So as it turned out, no-one looked cool.
