Arrived in Rio de Janeiro

Arrived groggy in Rio. Drove through interesting, heavy traffic to Ipanema Beach. Saw favelas.

Finally..

So we finally arrived in Rio after over 24hours of travel.. We sat through a storm delay in NYC on our plane - you know it~s trouble when you watch an entire movie before you even leave the runway.. But, after 4 different planes, and 29 hours of travel time - we arrived in Rio at our hotel. Oh man. Rio is as amazing as people say it is.. everything is larger than life - the city is giant, the beaches last forever, and the people are so friendly. Our hotel - the Caesar Park Rio - is right on I...

It's Legal To Drink Cold Beer At The Beach

... robberies at the beaches after dark are not uncommon. Ipanema appeared to be where the more wealthy Brazilians live. There are many upscale shops and restaurants located within close proximity and I found it very safe to walk around downtown Ipanema after dark. Copacobana did not seem nearly as safe as Ipanema so I always traveled by taxi in Copacobana after dark.
A city so beautiful it names a hill the Sugar Loaf

... floor where the house music is playing is packed very tight and no one can truly dance. We arrived at about 1am, and at least by 3am, the crowd thinned out enough to gyrate, bounce, and move about. We, and about half the club, cleared out at closing time at 5am. As Nyree and I were waiting for the others I learned a bit of her past, which is quite colorful and adventurous, as her family were forced out of her country for fear (and rightfully so) of being ...

Rio

... we got to the top the clouds had come over and it was quiet hard to see anything. It really made me feel like I was in Rio though. That afternoon we went to an Irish pub and watched Ireland tie with Italy in a football match, there was great 'craic' and anyone who annoys the Italian Football team is a winner in Dave and mines books! One night at the hostel everyone decided to go out to Lapa, the town's night club district, but which is also in ...

... were really friendly. We partied with them till the new day came and that was the second (cronologically the first) great night I was saying about. It is a pity that, due to the safety concern and my past experience, I didnt have my camera with me. Well, I guess there are thousands of pictures from the Sambodromo on the Internet and I am sure you can find ...

Day 5 - The Wedding

The wedding was in a town called Niteroi which overlooks Rio. It was a small and cozy event. The bride and groom looked great and very happy. The weather cooperated suspiciously well as it was drizzling boand then it stopped just before the bride arrived only to restart just as the last guests were leaving. Talk about Karma! After that, at around 11pm, we went to a Samba school called Mangueira and boy was ...

... Christ Statue. We were fetched after breakfast for our trip up the Corcovado to see the 38 metre tall statue of Christ. First the bus then the very steep funicular train ride up the mountain were most enjoyable seeing the sights of Rio before reaching the top. We were SO lucky. There was no sign of last night's wet weather, rather we had blue sky with some puffy clouds painting the most amazing picture for us. From the ...

Cansados

The sun will come out......today!

... see towering mountains all around you behind the high-rise buildings and hotels. Its just beautiful scenery with the mountains ending in beaches and scattered cities. My Norwegian fellow backpacker Jonas did a pretty rough job on my back sunscreen and I am a bit sore today so sadly avoided the beach.

Watched the sunset at the Christ statue last night. Brazil is the most Catholic country in the world (90%).There was a great view of the many other peaks ...
