A Surprise Visit

... seen anything like that - and then gave him a round of applause when his head (safely) broke the surface. I was a little indignant that I did not get the same reaction going off of the 6-foot rope swing.

After goodbyes all around, we headed back to town to watch the amazing sunset from our terrace, batido in hand. Batidos are milkshakes made with fresh fruit - in this case, papaya - and they're the perfect antidote to a steamy tropical evening.

Fancy-Pants on the Cheap

... for the guy to come the next day, and we walked over to Playa Preciosa, where the waves are usually a little better. It was still pretty bad - he caught a few waves on Thursday, but overall it was a bust.

We got back to the hotel right in time to have a drink on the terrace and watch the sun set over the ocean. Perfect! We went out for dinner and finally found food that wasn't of animal provenance. I ...

Happy Easter!

... be a little slower than normal just because of the holidays, but, in general, my projects are doing well. My current projects consister of: 1) Teaching English classes to adults and those classes are very fun two nights a week. 2) The Escojo group, a health/family planning group for youth, is moving along. I am interested in seeing what kinds of projects we get into next. The students ...

First trip to the beach - Samaná Peninsula

This weekend I travelled with six other girls to the Samaná peninsula. We arrived Friday afternoon and it poured down rain for the rest of the night. We also had an hour-long debate about which hotel to stay at because our original plans turned out to be much more expensive. But we ended up at a fairly nice place right on the beach. To my surprise there are a lot of businesses run by foreigners in ...

Happy Thanksgiving!

... up on lost time. As many hilarious or tragic errors as I have committed in the last six months, I am finally settling into some kind of routine of which to speak. My current projects consist of teaching three English classes, Monday, Tuesday and Friday. I have 7 to 8 year olds in the morning, 8 to 11 year olds in the afternoon and 12 to 15 years in my second afternoon class. My community has a strong desire in learning English ...

I'm Official!

... as possible. I want to take advantage of all the incredible opportunities in front of me. I feel like I have already learned so much both personally and professionally in my experiences both with Peace Corps and in my previous two Dominican communities. I know there is a lot of work to do and I'm ready. So, now you know where I am. Feel free to write me back with your ideas, comments and wisdom. And, definitely, wish me luck! Yours truly, Jennifer

... and desk, and even got the keys to an old "Club Deportivo" to use as my classroom so it's quite professional. There's even a Regidor (like a city council member) attending my class. He probably has the worst pronunciation of everyone, but damnit if he doesn't try hard. And then there is the dance troupe. The group is currently learning a number to perform at the Juegos Nacionales (kind of like the Junior Olympics and a really big deal that it is in Monte Plata) so I have ...

Going off to my site.......

Hello, I know that it has been a while since I last wrote, but things have been hectic. We went on our site visits and that still has me thinking some thoughts. I am not to far from the capital about 1.30 hours. The day we were leaving to see our sites we had this project partner day where everyone finds there partner and/or youth. Some chatting takes place followed by lecturing about expectations and other stuff, lunch, and then off to our sites. o youth ...
