Small village on the main road but Tucan Hotel set back. Not cheap and only 2 showers/toilets shared between up to 4 people in treehouse, 4 in hammocks, multiple others camping plus 12 people in dorms when fully occupied. Female shower/toilet always full of men as bigger - thankfully came when quiet.

Cocked up the directions to the falls, Cascadas Verde & didn't turn left before hardware store. Ended up crossing the river ...

Cloudbusting, and Running Up That Hill..

... it for the money.

Which is not to be said for the Bosque Del Niņos, The Childrenīs Eternal Rainforest. An Non Profit Organisation that have a small trail near Monteverde. They actually own an incredible amount of land and are dedicated to the upkeep of the rainforest and the animals that are within it. We had missed a night hike in the Amazon due to giant cockroaches landing on the roof sounding a bit like the stone seen from Steven Kingīs Carrie and were eager to see what ...

San Isidro-- Driving the Moutain of Death

After dropping Bev off at the airport we headed straight out of town. Of course this took us a good hour due to traffic and the inability to get proper directions! The map I we had purchased at a hotel the day when we came into the country was supposedly up-to-date, but so far I had counted around 10 mistakes. The San Jose portion was no different. By the time we got out of the city it was around 3 PM so we only had a few hours of daylight left and we still had to go ...

Monteverde - cloud forest and then some!

... on the way home, so had to hoof it for another 6 or 7kms.
Once I got home I had some tea, and managed to run into the two canadian girls who went swimming with us in La Fortuna. They are going where I plan to go tomorrow. I was going to get the 6am bus, but they are getting the 4:30am bus as we need to make a ferry and another bus to get to the next beach town. So its going to be a ridiculously early start!

Land of the Resplendent Quetzal

... have long twin tail feathers that can form a train over three feet long. The Quetzal that we saw was a juvenile male so he didn’t have the tail feathers and as per usual with birds he was rather a long way away and the wrong way of the light. However, seeing one of these endangered birds however far away was thrill enough for me.

By now quite a large crowd had gathered at the site along with guides with spotting scopes and binoculars. Oscar ...

Ziplining in a Cloud Forest -average weekday stuff

After La Fortuna we drove to Monteverde, which is a natural reserve or cloud forest (so called because at the altitude of 1800m there is canopy level cloud cover) and stayed in the nearby town of Santa Elena. On the way the Daihatsu Bego and its massive 2L engine came into its own as some of the īroadsī were actually just narrow dirt tracks full of stones and potholes. However it was worth it as we were able to see some beautiful scenery of Costa Rica's ...

Monteverde, Puerto Viejo, Monteverde

Bah! I am so bad at this blogging thing! I know I promised that I would write soon, but itīs hard to pay for internet when you know if you just wait a little longer you get it for free! So, the last 2 weeks, eh? Well, since I last wrote not much else happened in Monteverde. I mostly hung out with my Tico family at their house. We did all head to Curtisī house for some fresh tea, cookies, and a few games of Uno. Curtisī family is super nice. Two weeks ago was Charlas at the ...

Cerro Chirripo!

Jules and I are here in San Isidro, Costa Rica after a long, long............. long hike in Chirripo! When we arrived in San Gerardo (at the base of the trail) we were told by some local guys that we could reach the top in 4 hours if we were fast or 6 if we were a little slower. Plus they told us that we didn{t even need reservations to hike it... so we set out the next morning with our day packs at 5 AM. Well... we didn{t know what we were getting into. First it took us about ...
