Puerto Viejo

Asaf The public bus system in Costa Rica was a valuable friend to us during our stay. Itīs cheap and goes everywhere but the only problem is that itīs hot and stops every ten minutes so we couldnīt bare the idea of taking one down for eight or nine hours all the way to Puerto Viejo (from Fortuna). So killing two birds with one stone we decided to raft on the Rio Pacuare early in the morning and have the same excursion company take us down afterwards. I was excited for the rafting having heard...

Puerto Viejo and San Jose

Hello again! Now on to Costa Rica. After the border crossing, we decided to head to the Caribbean town of Puerto Viejo Talmanaca. It is a very small town, with no local buses and very few taxis. Puerto Viejo has a very large Jamanican influence and flavor to it. Everything is very laid back and tranquilo. There are a ton of beaches including a white sand beach and a black sand beach. We found a great hotel to stay at called the Casa Verde Lodge. This is the only place in this area of the coun...

New Year in Puerto Viejo

The laid back town of Puerto Viejo, on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, is a top destination for surfers and adventure seekers. The hotels were all packed to the rafters with travellers and holiday makers looking for a piece of the New Year action. The weather was crazily wet - so much so that the noise on the roof of our cabin was too loud to sleep on a couple of nights - but the town was a great place to chill out for a few days, eat good food and drink yummy cocktails to bring in the New ...

Jah, man!

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica was primarily settled by the Jamaicans that came to build the railroad late in the 19th century. The resulting blend of Costa Rican and Jamaican culture gives this part of the country a distinct society (Rene Levesque would be proud). Bob Marley is God here, surfers sporting dreads abound and it's easy to find decent jerked chicken. We've slowed our pace somewhat (much to Mandy's dismay) and have spent entire days swimming at the hotel pool and body-surfing i...

Change of plans

... side. We hopped in the backseat of one of Roy´s friend´s car headed East. It was dark when we arrived, and the place is a little dicey, but we´ll see how it is tomorrow. Since we had a huge lunch, we decided to keep it light for dinner. "Meat-On-A-Stick" and Ice Cream. If the town is lame, we´re outta here and on to Panama. It´s extremely hot and humid, so could be a long night. That´s all for now. Gotta share the internet! Hasta luego.

B&A
Otra vez!

... for all of us. After that, I was relaxed enough to put in my earbuds and tune out the world. The adventure wasn't quite over yet, though. When we got to San Jose, there was the usual cluster of taxi drivers waiting to pick up passengers. I flagged one down and told him where we were going, and he tried to tell me the last bus for Puriscal had already left. It was 8:50, and I knew the last bus wasn't until 10; I told him so, in my broken Spanish. He called his friend ...

Have another piece of chocolate cake...

... hi, so I popped into the bar. Next thing I know the 3 of us have hooked up with this American guy Mike, I've sorted out a room for the night with the bar owner (another Brit called Roger) and we're sitting on Mike's balcony supping beer after beer. En route to the balcony we'd got chatting to an American conspiracy theorist called Cliff, who's a mid-fifties throwback to a forgotten generation. "It was the CIA wot done it, man ...

Just a quick post since we are paying for internet

... To sum things up another way, we could refer to this as God´s backyard, and it would be a perfect description. Dad will be proud...I ate a fish a couple of nights ago. No, not a filet, not cut up and grilled. A fish. Eyeball, fin, scales and all. I tackled it. Ate it to the bone. It was delicious. Tomorrow I believe we have free internet in our hotel, so we´ll try to post tomorrow night. Dan, Liz, and Katie.
