What a difference a day makes. Yesterday I felt bouyed by the positive experiences of the day´s achievements, even getting my laundry done and my glasses fixed. But from there it went downhill. I was running late and so decided to eat in the cafeteria/transport cafe at the hotel. (I sat next to 4 French cyclists making their way from Bayonne to Cadiz, riding light-weight bikes, carrying no more than 5 kg packs and covering 150 kms a day. These guys were all 60 years of age!) I took myself up ...
Burgos, Castile-León, Spain and Canary Islands jamie_peteAs rough as I felt yesterday it is pleasing that things have actually turned out quite well. For one thing I feel much better today and even managed a good breakfast of (safe) carbohydrates and juice. I also slept well: just prior to putting my head on the pillow I switched on the TV to catch the final 4 minutes of a soccer match between Chelsea and Barcelona, which Barcelona won in injury time. Within seconds of the final whistle blowing the city outside my window erupted in a cacophany of n...

Because of the problems with the Van we have had to adjust our plans...we've decide to head straight to Villa Martin as quickly as possible...So... no time for De-tours. Sticking to the motorways...Managed to reach the north side of Madrid by dark...Time to find somewhere to park up for the night...Buenos noches.
... and screaming. At one point, as we were getting ready to go into the cathedral, a bunch of protesters went running down the street followed by hoardes of cops. It was enough to wake all of us up.
Apparently there was a bombing in Burgos 2 months ago, so there were cops and security everywhere.
Overall...a pretty cool city. I'm glad I'm not living there though. It seems a little too crazy for me.
... My nightmare of a trip to Extremadura did have two main good points, however--I got to see Moraleja (where I'll be teaching) and Coria (a town about 10 minutes away from Moraleja and where I'll probably end up living. Though Moraleja has everything I'd need to live, I'd feel like I was living in a fishbowl. Coria isn't much bigger, but it was big enough that I didn't feel like everyone knew I wasn't from there ...
Burgos, Castile-León, Spain and Canary Islands ksullivan... been the first English I've heard in a while, which has been a nice thing. The complete immersion in Spanish the past few days will do nothing but improve my grasp of the language.
I headed inside and grabbed a table, unwittingly picking a dirty and very sticky one. I wondered if it was my arms sticking to a dirty table, or if it was the table sticking to my dirty arms. This made me wonder if anything would stick ...
... move on from and not dwell on or share, and instead focus on now being happy. It is sometimes hard for me to imagine the times when i was sad back then, they seem so foreign and uncomprehensible. At the same time, however, i do think there are some unresolved issues that i may have to address more directly.
Regardless, i went to bed around 1030 in the giant shed, planning on sleeping in a bit later the next day...
... about 100 teenagers waiting to give us bad looks as we staggered in.
A bit frustrated with the morning, not being able to understand the dialogue made our wanderings seem more exhausting.
Off in the morning heat, where we planned to stay at Rabe Del Camino. However, the small hostel was run by a very mean woman who we felt was overcharing us, so we plowed on through the meseta. THe meseta is unbelieveable and i will try to describe it in a later post. THe ...
Beginning to find a rythym, and, though the limbs and feet still hurt on occasion, the body has an amazin capacity to recover. Most of these few days were spent out in the sticks so arriving into burgos to a world heritage listed cathedral was quite the sight.
Burgos, Castile-León, Spain and Canary Islands paulhand33... us so we were pretty crammed in the car, and since we had all woken up early, my two sisters, Ed and I all tried to accommodate ourselves as comfortable as possible in the back seat to try to sleep during the ride. As it turns out, Burgos was a pretty big and important city. At least that was the impression we were given when we reached the city limits. The streets and main avenues were wide, lots of people walking in the sidewalks, tall ...
