    ... in Romania state that each building requires a soul sacrifice before the building is utilized. The statue of a child at the top of the black church represents the little boy said to be this churches soul sacrifice. He supposedly fell off the roof not long after the opening and now watches over the church. The people no longer sacrifice humans but still sacrifice animals to bless a new building.     Begun as a fortress in 1211, the castle construction began in 1377, completed in 1388. Over the years, the castle changed hands peacefully and through battle several times. Queen Maria, loved by the people of Romania, resided here from 1920 to 1947.

    In any case, there were far too many people traversing the trail for bears to be a problem. It was an overcast day, but no rain was in the forecast. The trail wound back and forth in a zig-zag up the mountain. At times the path was more piles of rock than anything else, which made it a more challenging climb, but I relished the challenge at this point in my life.
