first of nine days back at sea

... We are taking about nuclear energy now so it gets a little complex when he starts going into the chemistry aspects of it and we all just looked at him like he was speaking greek for the majority of the class. Afterwards I grabbed lunch on deck seven and then went back to my room to blog and start studying for global studies. I went to work out around six and then came back to my room to finish some blogs about Japan before heading to bed.

Yokohama & Kamakura

... sitting in this area 2 minutes prior and now it was blocked off. Hmm, so I go back to the bar and ask this one girl what happened. I said, "Um, excuse me but I was just sitting up there and now there is a rope up. Am i not allowed to sit there?" She said it was for locals only but then she walked me back and lifted the rope up so I could go back to my seat. I caught some interesting looks from these two guys who had been sitting up there with me. I think they ...

The lost shoe

... LOL:) It was quite funny. The kids really really liked us though. To make things a little shorter i was dragged by Yuki and the other kids through what they called a haunted house (just an empty house around the church), climbed a tree, went over a fence to a sakura tree field (gorgeous by the way), learned an amazing way to play rock paper scissors, and played freeze tag. Oh I forgot to mention......they stole my shoe.... Yes we went into a house and took off our shoes ...

... and they helped us the first day! Throughout our five days in Japan we traveled to Yokohama, Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Kobe. We spent the first day in Tokyo, went to the Imperial Palace and walked around the city. The next day was spent in Kyoto, we traveled to the Golden Palace and were able to eat a traditional Japanese pizza. When I say were able, it means you should never do it, unless you looooove fish paste! I really enjoyed Kyoto because it was ...

... had warned me about the difficulty of using international credit cards and I didn't want to be left in a tight spot. After a little difficulty, I got some money out. That, together with the money I'd withdrawn in Perth, should see me through a little while at least, I thought. On the way to the hostel, Hideko and I talked non-stop! Japan was vibrant - there was kanje (Japanese language characters) everywhere - I couldn't tell which shops ...

Tokyo, round 1

... I realized it obviousilly wasn't Aoyama Dori. After arriving in Harajuku (not necessarily by plan) I ended up turning and walking down an alley-like pedestrian street PACKED with people. Crazy-packed...my picture doesn't do the area justice. The whole area (about 5 blocks or so) was just filled with all sorts of fashion and accessory stores and the people to buy those fashions & accessories. I walked up Takeshita Dori and ...

... on what type of coins to throw into the offering box. The 5-yen coin is associated with good luck and the 10-yen coin is associated with bad luck. Apparently the reason behind this superstition is due to the phonetic similarities between the 5/10-yen coins with some Japanese words for good/bad luck. As a result, the Japanese only offer 5 yen pieces and not 10 yean pieces. The whole process consists of throwing the 5-yen coin into the offering box and then ...

More Tokyo Tales

Sorry for the delay in posting...the last few days have been very hectic, but very fun. Dinner on Friday night was quite possibly the best meal we have had on the trip. Sukiyaki is very similar to fondue and includes an assortment of beef, vegetables and tofu that is marinated in a "secret sauce" that likely includes soy sauce, sugar, sake and other ingredients. After the food is cooked, it is eaten over a bowl of rice with some people choosing to dip the ...
