... but there are many traffic lights along the way and for some reason they all turn on RED when we approach them. No green zone here..... After a while the GPS lady tells us to turn right and leave the highway. We pass cute, small villages and of course lots of rice paddies and cherry orchards. Somehow we miss a left turn, but the GPS lady knows her way around like no other and brings us back to the spot where we need to make the left turn. Nice, wide road, this ...

... Very convenient, you don't have to take a bus or a taxi after arriving by train. After checking in we stroll around in downtown Yamagato, a small town surrounded by mountains. Much to our surprise the Japanese restaurant at the hotel serves Shabu-Shabu which we happily order. The beautifully marbled meat is local Yamagato beef. At the end we get delicious local udon to put in the broth, quite a special dinner! Off to Ginzan Onsen, a small onsen village, ...

... the machine off then wait 3 minutes before the door can be opened. Quite a long washing and drying cycle, will set the next load on the quick cycle and dry separately which is much faster! A true highlight of any japanese experience is Zao Onsen, a ski resort town about 45 minutes East of Yamagata.
Came here a bit by chance and was very lucky indeed. This town is so charming, lots of little lodges and restaurants, it's pretty, clean and surrounded by mountains, ski slopes and lakes.
