... across a batting cage. It was out of place for the area. We both gave it a whirl. 25 balls for 300 yen. I went twice and tired myself out. It was pretty fun. I did laundry once I got back to K's. While I was waiting I chatted with a Thai girl named Pang. I wanted to go to the onsen in the hotel nearby before it closed at 12:00 am. It was really dark out and I never found it. ... the most intricate one requires more than 300 manipulations to open! By the time we finished shopping, it has started to rain. We adjusted our plans and visited a private museum (there are hundreds of them around the country) with a great view of the lake. Mt Fuji unfortunately was behind rain clouds. The most amazing displays were the collection of kaleidoscopes and Chinese jade and ivory carvings. Some nice modern Japanese art as well.

... main role of a Sekisho was to "control incoming guns and outgoing women", which means to prevent weapons from being brought into Edo and wives and children from leaving Edo. However, Hakone Sekisho didn't really inspect incoming guns, but always seriously inspected outgoing women. It is sunny this morning, with a chilly wind. ... hoping to get a nice view of Mount Fuji from the banks of the lake. We find a small road leading towards the lake and there even is a large parking lot, couple of small restaurants and a small shrine. This is apparently THE spot from where to view Mount Fuji, when he is visible that is. There is also a large rock with a story carved in it in Japanese characters and there is soft music playing from somewhere near that stone. Too bad we can't ...

... in the lake. Juliet walks down and back up, we decide to reserve our energy for the climb all the way up to the shrine. A path leads from the red Torii gate in Lake Ashi up a series of steps (quite a few!) flanked by lanterns through a dense forest of immensely tall pine trees to the main building of the shrine.
