Hiwasa, Shikoku, Japan cavallette... geographical features and the diversity of climates caused by the mountains, sea and rivers of Tokushima Prefecture have created a natural environment which is rich and varied. Semi-high-mountain plants of average height grow on the mountains around Mount Tsurugi, including Japan's Southern-most colony of shirabiso (a subarctic ...
Tokushima, Japan bizan413... monsoon is strong, and enough snow falls that it is possible to ski in winter. Moreover, the altitude of this area is so high that it is pleasantly cool in summer, making it perfect for escaping the heat, hiking or walking in the woods. The Southern area belongs to the warm and wet "Pacific Ocean side" climate. In this area, it is warm throughout the ...

Tokushima, Japan bizan413... I've ever experienced in my life. I thought that it would be awkward because it's like a huge public bath, but it wasn't nerve-wracking at all! It was the nicest 20 minute soak, then quick break, then another 15-20 minute soak.... there was an outdoor sauna where we could just lounge together in the hot mineral water and look over the edge of the water at the rest of the island and out over the ocean. It was just a very complete experience. Next, we left for the ship ...
Tokushima, Japan surledep... s no other way off this island". They keep telling us it's against regulations, the bike must be "made small" and wrapped in a bag or tarp. We explain that our bikes don't get small - and this is true, with front and back racks, not much changes even if you pull the wheels off and fold things up like the Japanese are used to doing. After going back and forth for a while, they give up, throw tarps OVER our fully loaded bikes, and put us back on the ...
Tokushima, Japan imapilot... They put all the tourist attractions into one building. Very convenient. After we went to the top and looked out the Tokushima area, we went back to the dance hall to see a live performance. With half an hour to kill, we went to the museu, which consisted of a collection of pictures of the festival being done in the early 1900's and even dioramas/models of what it probably looked like during the Meiji and prior ...
Tokushima, Japan niknash... to me as an educational/cultural event for our students. It seems like this sort of thing is arranged once or twice a year for the students and the activities vary year to year. This year the students were able to enjoy a dragon dance and a 'Chinese lion dance' (quoted from the textbook.) In the morning we had classes as usual and in the afternoon the 2nd year students and 3rd year students were ushered into the gym. The 1st year students had to watch the ...
Tomogaoka, Japan brianneinjapan... dance to the music that was blared from speakers in the center of the grounds while slowly moving the circle counter-clockwise. The onlookers stood around and watched. My favorite dances were the fast ones that had a bit of action in them (keep in mind this was all set to very traditional Japanese music- if you'd like to hear what this sounds like please call Shannon, she has a wonderful CD.) Typically there were about 5-10 moves that would be ...
