Another pastry breakfast (what was that we said about losing weight in Japan...?) followed by another train, this time to Tokushima, on the east coast of Shikoku. This train was pretty busy, mostly because it featured 'Anpanman,' a popular kid's character on the side, and also HAD A BALL PIT IN ONE OF THE CARRIAGES! Trains in England need to up their game.

After dropping our bags off, we had a little mooch about the ...

The Solitary Pilgrim

A strange day to do a walk for no reason. Cloudy with the sun threatening to burst through I started on the first five temples of the famous 88 temple walk. Serene and well trodden there is a ritual to be found in walking. A clarity of mind which is fostered in tradition here in Shikoku. You look lost, help is thrust upon you. We left on the Ishizuchi 3 Limited Express train at 8.45am bound for Iyo-Saijo at 10.18am. It is a distance of about 110Km on the northern coast of Shikoku. We could see the bridge that we were on yesterday as well as the Seto Inland Sea. It was slightly drizzly but not enough to require a raincoat. Besides, it was only a 20 minute walk to the station and we would be on the train after that. It fined up once we reached Iyo-Saijo.

Today was spent with my friend Shiho showing me around the area. One of my very first impressions is that there are vending machines everywhere! Anything from juice, pop, beer, cigarettes and I'm sure many other things can be purchased from them. Often there are more than one in a spot. The first stop of the day was a shrine and guess what else?!? Stairs! There were 1000 stairs up to the main shrine and ...

The Iya valley is sold in the guidebooks as undiscovered hidden Back to nature Japan. So I was ready for a rushing river and long hikes. And then there is the famous vine bridge crossing the Iya river, a feat of old timey engineering. But I should have remembered that in Japan , if there is something cool to see there is definitely going to be bus parking. So, I stayed in a little guesthouse ,Kel Na Sob, perched ...
