This charming village may be a highlight of the trip -　a touch of `old Japan` so elusive in the cities. Found another old ryokan where no one spoke English, but managed to get a room, and head straight to the onsen.

There is a shopping road called Haccho Oji in this area too. There are a bunch of souvenier shops and places selling soft ice cream. I wanted to try the miso flavored soft ice cream but it was too cold out!

After an exhausting few days at Fukuoka, I decided to head to a more relaxed sort of place. I headed to Beppu, which is basically a touristy sort of town/city built on hot springs. ... of Aso, so we took off to scale the tallest of the peaks in the region, Naka-dake. After about 1.5 hours we reached what was essentially the top, no mean feat given the gusty winds and the loose rocks underfoot. However, we made it up and the view was utterly amazing--this is probably what keeps those crazy climbers excited about hiking up ridiculously challenging mountains. ... on the big fellow yet. It's on my to-do list, really. He plays for the Hamamatsu Higashimikawa Phoenix (say that 3 times real fast!) of the Basketball Japan League. Teammates often call him Ming Ming or Sun. When he dunks the ball, it feels as if the entire floor is shaking. He mostly lumbers down the floor, but has a soft shooting touch.

... the station, had another great cheap tempura rice bowl - consists of a bowl of rice with batter-fried vegetables and two of the biggest prawns I've seen, with a bowl of miso soup. ... Strangely the approach to the old bathhouse is straight through one of downtown Beppu's biggest nightlife districts, which mostly one hostess or strip bar after another. Given how the two industries have intertwined in the city's history, perhaps it's only logical, but it made for a rather surreal walk.
