... than I feared. The hostel is in a 100 year old Japanese ryokan. It's old dark wood, big windows, lattice work panels, inner courtyard garden, steep stairs etc. The bunks are very sturdily built and all have privacy curtains, light and socket to charge gadgets. I was the only non Oriental staying - the others from China, Taiwan, Macau and elsewhere. Very quiet at night and I am pleased to report - no snoring!

Hot baths are obviously part of the culture in Japan and every hotel room as a bath, it might be tiny but it will work. This one was maybe 1.4m long and probably a 1m deep. Interestingly the mark of the water is only half way up the bath tub but when I got in the water level rose up to the brim, which gives you an idea of how small it is and how folded up I was. ... side of Todai-ji. The steps up were lined with lanterns, which was really pretty. There was a beautiful wooden hall next to it. You couldn't go in, but you could see and hear the monks chanting, which was pretty cool. I headed into Todai-ji museum to have a quick wander round, then went and sat in a tea room and had a set of tea and Japanese cakes. They were amazing. After the hour long train ride to get there we walked uphill throuh a cute street in order to get to the first temple which was called Kofukuji which was awesome. ... tiny but really fishy. So interesting walking down the market and seeing and smelling all the goodies. Sent probably an hours walking down one strip trying things. Made it to the end and found a subway station it was now 4:45pm and shops shut at 5pm so we headed it the subway just before peak, holy cow the trains were packed, managed to buy tickets and jam onto a crowded train only had to go 3 stops so not to bad, stayed close to doors ...
