Nara is quite small and we probably could have came on a day trip from Kyoto but the quiet was nice. We sat in the hotel, Jill doing her assignment and me chuckling away to myself listening to Talk Sport and looking at offroad bike videos on the web.

... the freebies, we headed out to explore the Nara town area.

Naramacchi (Town)

We popped in a gift shop to see what trinkets they had on sale and had a conversation with a lovely (and slightly scary) old lady which really tested our Japanese language skills.

Next, we visited Naramacchi Koshi-no-ie, a traditional Japanese house opened up to the public for free.

... because deer are everywhere. They are cute, of course, but also a bit aggressive, and they beg everyone for food, and they are not actually small animals. These deer also make a really weird noise, kind of a cross between a baby crying and a parrot. I have never before heard deer make any sounds, so this was a novelty.

... messengers of God' and are therefore given the freedom of the park( presumably to deliver messages?!?). Having been around humans for so long the deer are incredibly tame and you can stroke and feed them with ease. Even kids chasing, poking and screaming at them didn't really worry them(and this happened a lot). The deer had even learnt to bow in the traditional Japanese manner of greeting and respect(see video). ...
