Another pastry breakfast (what was that we said about losing weight in Japan...?) followed by another train, this time to Tokushima, on the east coast of Shikoku. This train was pretty busy, mostly because it featured 'Anpanman,' a popular kid's character on the side, and also HAD A BALL PIT IN ONE OF THE CARRIAGES! Trains in England need to up their game.

After dropping our bags off, we had a little mooch about the ...

A strange day to do a walk for no reason. Cloudy with the sun threatening to burst through I started on the first five temples of the famous 88 temple walk. Serene and well trodden there is a ritual to be found in walking. A clarity of mind which is fostered in tradition here in Shikoku. You look lost, help is thrust upon you. ... had soba and grilled river trout and was treated to cookies by the super nice staff while I waited for the bus back to Oboke. Then There was a boat ride and a mega walk up a hill with creepy ghost statues, chatty oba sans that gave me candy and I even saw a tanuki! Then onsen at the hotel and back for a giant vegan dinner. Now that I am just getting my bearings and remembering more Japanese it is time to go. ...

... station in the middle of nowhere. The "town" had no shops and it only had the local outdoor vending machines as supplies. Having not eaten and knowing we had a further 2 hour train ride, we had to settle for a "calorie mate" bar which can only be described as a gone off Scottish shortbread biscuit without any sugar. Delicious. To accompany the calorie mate bar we each had an awful canned coffee which had clearly been in the vending machine for years as no one ever ...

... humidity. Me, my clothes, even my bag, was soaked in sweat. 8 weeks of this - **** that!!! I was ready to throw in the towel on the very first day! But I dug deep and found one last reserve of adrenaline. I pushed on. And pushed on. And made it. I nearly cried of relief when temple no 6 appeared in front of me. I decided Shukubo (temple stay) was in it's place and that is the upside with walking at this time of year, places are empty. No desperate search for accommodation. Where ever ...
