Another pastry breakfast (what was that we said about losing weight in Japan...?) followed by another train, this time to Tokushima, on the east coast of Shikoku. This train was pretty busy, mostly because it featured 'Anpanman,' a popular kid's character on the side, and also HAD A BALL PIT IN ONE OF THE CARRIAGES! Trains in England need to up their game.

After dropping our bags off, we had a little mooch about the ...

... did not have the same help. An evening with local young people busking, with balmy weather was great and we went for drinks and food later which rounded up a good day.

The final day here was uneventful, I had planned to go and catch a puppet show, but I had written down the time the bus gets to the theatre and not leaves. Now that I am just getting my bearings and remembering more Japanese it is time to go. ...

... on the tourist leaflets, we were slightly underwhelmed by the whirlpools when we got there! We had thought that there would be 2 really big, deep whirlpools under the bridge, however it is actually more like lots of little whirlpools which all twist and turn into one another. It was still a pretty impressive sight though.

After seeing the whirlpools we made a mad dash to get the next train to Takumatsu only to find that on the way we had an hour stop at ...

I can see why this is off-season for walking henro.. Or any pilgrims for that matter. It is crazy hot and humid. On my first day I seriously wondered what I had gotten myself into. I downed litre after litre of water. My backpack grew from 10kg to a hundred kilos, or so it felt anyway. The route led me passed rice paddies and small villages. Nowhere was any shadow to hide in. During the 6km walk between two of the temples I thought I was about to collapse, I just could't hack that ...
