... by 15 Tokugawa shoguns until restoration of imperial power in 1868. After lunch, three of us and our tour guide caught a 45 minute bus ride to Chuzenji. We had to wind up a mountain to reach this little town and it was here that we visited Kegon waterfall. We took an elevator down so we could get a better view. ... and off we go to the little town of Nikko, a little mountain town with a wonderful mountain stream running through it. We find the bus to the shrines and we settle in for a lovely ride. It's all very green and the pine trees remind me of coastal redwoods-and nestled among them is the Toshogu shrine complex.

The shrines are amazing. I'll let my pictures describe them for me. The place was peaceful even though school kids on a field trip ...

... Japanese (sliding paper doors and silk edged tatami mats) influences. The painted cedar doors were especially beautiful in my opinion. One thing that really surprised us was the billiards room! It seemed so out of place with its green table top and art deco lights next to the paper doors and walls. The villa truly celebrated traditional Japanese craftsmanship. ... lovingly restored to it's original splendour. Unfortunately, the restoration is a constant task and the main gate was covered over with scaffolding and tarp while it was restored. We will have to settle for seeing several cheeky monkeys at home rather than the Three Wise Monkeys that decorate the gate.
