10 of us jumped into two private buses this morning with our driver, Jorgi again, to drive up the nearby ski resort of Mt Vihen, at around 2500 metres. Our guide, Kraski, was a local ski instructor. He had won three bronze and one silver in the Bulgarian downhill and slalom so a pretty fit character. He took us for a half an hour walk up the hillside to a lake, through the snow.

... end. The locals first scrub down their laundry on the concrete bench nearby, then throw it all into the bucket, let Mother Nature do its thing, then hang all their intimates up on the nearby drying racks. Today, one of the locals, was doing their carpets. How they do this in the middle of the winter when there's 3 metres of snow is anyone's guess.

After getting us in the mood, Baba Yinka and Baba Lina serenaded us with some traditional songs, possibly a local version of "Danny Boy". They next culled a few of us from the herd and took us into the next room and dressed us up in the local clobber. The four of us were then paraded into the main room and taught some fairly basic local dances. The dances were a ...

We hiked up to Ivan Rila's tomb. Had some time on our own with the ward who introduced us to the tame robins that flew on my hand.
Many Bulgarians come up to this place for religious reasons, leave whishes in the wall, fetch source's water. Interesting to see where the Orthodox Church leaves room for connectedness with nature. I however don't believe that Ivan slept in this cave for 7 years without even preparing himself a mattress.

We tried to venture over from the lift station to Ivan Vazov Hut. We knew that the hut is open and we had food for self-supply with us. There was quite some new snow lately unfortunately after a snow-meagre winter. Later the day bad weather came in that was forecasted to sustain for the following days. All in all reasons for us to buy a ticket on the lift down again and postpone the Rila mountain crossing to a later date.
