Saint Martins

In Europe, there is a holiday called Saint Martin's. The story is that Martin was a monk and during a snowstorm he cut his coat in half and gave part of it to a beggar. So the holiday is about sharing. To celebrate, kids decorate lanterns then march around (we marched around a small lake in Munich) and they sing lantern songs then finish by receiving a pastry goose that they break apart and share with their ...

Finishing up Germany

(61 miles) Today, we rode a little too hard and realized that we probably need to slow down a bit. Its kinda the tortoise and the hare bit. We mostly rode today not a whole lot of sight seeing. Chrissy hit some gravel today and fell of her bike skinning her knee. Also we saw a lady on a bike get hit by a car. I guess it's just one of those days? After our long day we showed up at the less expensive very welcoming canoe/camping place.

Yet more fine weather and surprising progress

Departing Regensburg was easy I'm coming back! Todays target was a hostel in a town called Straubing. I'm not sure weather to divide the run to the Austrian border into two or three stops. However the hostel will have food available and as its easter Sunday this is a big advantage. Unlike being in a hostel on the second floor; lots of steps to move your bags. It was dry fine and sunny, not too warm to start with and the path was level. I've found the trip meter and seem to be making 12 ...

Almost time to go home. Nooooooo.

This was where we found the best hostel of our travels. The place was great. It had it's own bar and a couple of "happy hours" a day. After a day's wandering we would spend some time playing pool, watching Fox sport and drinking beer with other backpackers. It was like going to a party every night. We even met an Aussie working behind the bar there one night. Munich ...

A night in Straubing

We picked Straubing because it is in a pretty part of Bavaria. Our hotel turned out to be at the back of a car hire place a fair way from town - need to pay more attention during the booking I guess. Anyway, the hotel wasn't too bad, though we had to drive into the town. Straubing itself is quite a nice medium ...

A Trip to bavaria

... Cathedral is the most magnificent cathedral I have seen since I have been here. When I went inside I just wanted to fall to my knees and pray.I could have looked at the staind glass windows all day. We also did some shopping, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of shopping in Regensburg. Not too shabby. Anyway, it was a short trip but it was very relaxing and refreshing. One thing Annie and I have both noticed a lot since we have been here is the ...

... dark if the rain persisted. It looked pretty neat, so I'm guessing its on the list for cities to visit at a later date. Thursday Salzburg World Cup day. After deciding that driving 3 hours to Nurenberg to be outside the stadium that the US was playing in, we came up with the alternative plan of heading to the FanZone they had in downtown Salzburg, figuring that would be enough excitement for us. The Italian game and the USA game are on at the same time(what are they, nuts ...
