... driving in snow for the first time in a small car and also with no chains on the tires.
We reached a little town called Silverton and checked at the information center, the roads ahead were much worse and there had been a few accidents so we decided we would turn around and head back towards Durango and find somewhere closer to Raton to stay the night. After 3 hours driving in the snow....although we weren't always calm we did get some pretty cool photos.
... where I watched a movie about the monument and went through their small museum. I then took the self-guided tour of the ruins. It was a bit uncomfortable walking around with wind gusts of nearly 60 mph. The story of the fort was more interesting to me than the ruins themselves.

improving. I heard two people talking about how scared they were driving to the top. By the time I got to the top the wind had picked up substantially.
I hiked the Crater Vent Trail, a 0.2 mile, paved trail that leads to the bottom of the crater, which is only about 100 feet down from the parking ...

I thought the plains were remote but whilst they are on an unimaginable scale they have been tamed for our benefit, however temporarily that may be. As we entered the Mesas of New Mexico it felt like the Wild West. It would be very easy to imagine the early settlers and pioneers struggling for years and years to cross the plains only to get to this section and wonder why their God had deserted them.
... and swim in the creek. The drought here and one month later in the year means the sand now will burn bare feet and the creek is about 2 inches deep. Will still be cold water though, which sounds really really good after days of 100 plus weather. After the dunes, tomorrow, we're heading a wee bit north to a UFO tower, as a brief detour. Folks around those parts claim to see so many UFO's they have built a structure ...
