... Germany, and it sounded like he found some in Quincy too. He told me the whole story of how his parents met, where they moved, and a very long winded timeline of who he's met from his family tree. He was wearing the same color of knee-high tube socks as his skin color, and it made me look twice. I got a vibe from him like he was desperately searching not for his family but for himself. He mentioned some recent deaths. ...

It's Flag Day and my flag of choice is a giant banner that reads, "IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!"

I celebrated at Mom's with a good book, Lifetime movies (murder & mayhem, not sappy), and pistachio cake. She even let me have the gooey center pieces - quite possibly because she saw what happened when The Nightmare Nanny didn't get her way.

Here in Fort Madison, Iowa (my hometown) packing snacks for the trip. Costco visit (thanks Julie & Nevaeh) yielded enough granola bars and salted nut rolls to grow very tired of them forever. Along with 16 lbs of a homemade fruit & nut mix, and protein in the form of tuna, turkey jerky, and cheez-its. I give the cheez-its one ...

... to Mt. Sterling, IL. I was really hoping we'd encounter a Starbucks or a Dunkin' Donuts in the very least, but it wasn't meant to be....an hour and fifteen minutes of cornfields later, we arrived in Mt. Sterling, population 1900, and settled into a McDonald's for their wi-fi. We're staying at the fairgrounds tonight and if they'll let us, we're going to stay there the whole weekend too.

Up early this morning for another long day. Only stops we made were for food and fuel and a photo stop beside the Mississippi River before heading to Keokuk for the night. After dinner we walked down to the river and watched a tug push barges into the lock, one o 23 locks on the river.

Along the back roads there is corn field after corn field, the shopping centre was surrounded by a corn field.
