Painted Monastaries, Farms & Fall Foliage Backdrop

We arrange for Monica to give us a tour of the painted monasteries. She is trained as a tour guide. Public transportation to these remote sites is very limited and would take several days to see the top 4. We take a beautiful route through the hills. The monasteries are surrounded by farms. We visit Voronet, Moldovita, Suceavita, Humur. They were built around 1500 with their exterior walls decorated in extensive and ...

Over the Mountains to Suceava We Will Go

Before I leave the hostel, I get my laundry back. It has been 24 hours and the laundry is folded but is very wet. I am guessing that they had it had been drying outside when the rain hit last night. Yuck!

I am crossing the mountains to get to the Northeast section of Romania, apparently an uncommon path. There is only one mini-bus per day. The availability of such buses is difficult to ascertain until one is actually at the departing location. The hostel is able to ...

Mrs Eugenia and our first hitchhike

... a big guy, and at that time his head was completely shaved. In fact he does not have a gob of a thug, though I was doubting that with his presence we`d stop anyone. Additionally, he mentioned something about me carrying his tent every other day, and in general he was acting as if he was being on a constant speed. Trying to catch our first car, we started getting to know each other. We had about an hour for the first chat, as then we finally managed to stop somebody. It was a ...

A Final Final Final....

Today is our last day in Botosani. Our luggage is going to be loaded on a truck headed overnight to Bucharest. We are going to the Mayor of Botosani's office this afternoon for a reception where we will get a formal certificate and invitation back to Botosani for next year. We then go to a glass factory in Dorohoi (Dorahoy). Romanians have many famous glass artists and their work is beautiful. I have a few pieces at home so just ask and I will show them to you ...

The Village People Part II

Thursday was a very good day. The rush of patients slowed down as it usually does this time in the week. All the surgery schedules were filled, so most of our time was spent keeping records and there were a lot of vitamins and medicine handed out to some very needy kids. Yesterday, we saw more gypsies than usual. The gypsies are acutally "Roma" and no one is certain where they originated from. Some believe they came from India. They had darker ...

Delays !

... do everything a little slower than everyone else. After dinner, we got back on the bus for 2 more hours and checked into our hotel for a 6 hour night of sleep and then we had a 4 hour bus ride today to Botosani. 8 hours on the bus all total so were all ready to get out and stretch. The hotel last night was 1 star. A very cheap motel six with only a sheet and a pillow. Pictures will follow later this week when I download some. Our hotel is Botosani has been remodeled and is very nice ...

Painted Monestaries

... the trip took several hours longer than expected. We arrived in the first monastery and it was breathtaking. They are painted on every surface with pictures about 3' X 5', inside and out. They tell bible stories (mostly new testament and prophets) and describe the saints and martyrs of the Romanian Orthodox church. There are 9, and they all have similarities ...

Walking 15km through the countryside in the rain??

... and then I continued around the bend for the road out to Radauti. I tried flagging down a few more as I edged towards the end of the village, then finally one stopped: a small sports car full of young Romanian guys. They weren't going to Suceava, but they could take me to Radauti. Again, not the best thing, but better than slogging through the by now pretty heavy rain. Then the driver proceed to hurtle down the highway at 140km per hour - a two-lane highway in the middle of rural ...
