... We left the hostel at 10.30am and began the long drive to Pousada Santa Clara, our lodge in the Pantanal. The Pantanal is a massive grassland/wetland in central Brazil and is the place to go to see animals, even more so than the Amazon. The Pousada (farm, cattle ranch) was very nice, and had pool, air con, and all meals included, as well as daily tours and activities to see animals. On the way to the lodge we saw blue-and-yellow macaws, giant river otters, capybara, caiman, and marsh deer.

The capybara is the largest rodent in the world and will retreat to the water if threatened. They look just like giant guinea pigs and they can gather in groups of more than 50.

Fortunately, poeple in Brazil speak more English than in other countries of South America, good for us:-)Bus journey was interesting at one point to the fact that there traveled more drivers than passengers.
