... we'd gotten settled, it was midnight. After such a long journey, we were all ready to hit the sack. However, we only had 3hrs sleep as we were to leave at 03:00 in order to make it to the sunrise point. At over 2000m above sea level, the temperature is chilly here, especially during the early hours of the morning. While i can improvise and manage for short durations, i am ill equipped to deal with the cold. So i "borrowed" (and later returned), one of the woolen blankets ...

... We then left and started the trek to the other mountain which was a 6 hour drive away. The place we stayed was in the middle of the forest and it was ****. Was a **** dinner too, food was cold. We tried to sleep but was so grimy was ...

Maybe low expectations are the way forward! We tried to get an early nights sleep for a 230 am wake up for the famous Mt bromo sunrise ...

... boat - for a fee of course! A couple of locals also joined us and we puttered out to spot some big fish! Normally it'd take hours to get out to deep waters to see such large sea creatures but we soon spotted fins breaking the water and around 3 whale sharks having a big feeding session - they swim at the surface and filter water through their huge mouths catching plankton and wee fishes! They are beautiful creatures, they have hundreds ...

... Bromo. I took a horse up and walked down.

From the crater's lip there are great views of the surrounding area. But most compelling was looking down into the crater's mouth -- a huge orifice with steam billowing out of it, hot and sulphurous... truly awe-inspiring. It's easy to understand why people through the ages have felt it necessary to appease whatever entity or force controlled such power. It made the other steaming fissures I've seen look puny. I, too, made an offering, ...
