Prambanan

... We were taking the time to rehydrate but not a negative word was said. They talked about how tired they were but not in a whining way, more of just a matter of fact way. The next task was even harder, we had to take this pile of flatten it out. So, they could use the old bricks and plaster as the new foundation. This involved more shoveling of rocks and standing on uneven ground. After an hour of this, the students were separated into two ...

*Day 53: Ary's Hospitality

... Something-Something Mosque, Surabaya's oldest and one of the oldest in Java, and just in time for prayer as well. It was an immense, tranquil building. At the entrance was a circular array of sinks which everyone was required to cleanse their hands in before entering. Also present was a "Please do not enter without Muslim attire" sign. Oh well, there goes that. Just then... Where's Ary? "He went to buy you Muslim attire." Me in my Head: "Oh you've gotta be ...

... to factories used to refine sugars, medicines, etc. I bought several pack of cigarettes and bread on my way there and offered some to him. He put a couple of loose cigarettes in his pocket and together we had breakfast. He told me that he has two children and he works 5 days a week. He would make two trips to the crater per day but each trip would take at least 4 hours. He had been working since 4am. I told him that he is one of the strongest people I know and he laughed. I ...

... sped away with the money claiming it was 50000 in the beginning. Plah. So we were there exhausted, hungry and angry at the local menthality of tourist equals money. So no wonder we were paranoid whenever local approached us afterwards... We bought tickets for the morning train at seven and agreed on a lift to hotel by a local who spoke some Swedish. Sign of trust ;) He was nice however, and the drive was as we agreed and they took us to Wisma ...

Crossing into Java

Bali is predominately Hindu, the biggest Hindu outpost in the world. Java however is nearly 80% Muslim. Going by recent news reports I was expecting to get my head kicked in as soon as I set foot off the ferry. Not so. All the people I've met have been so friendly. Everyone has a wave and a "Hello Mister" for you as you walk down the street. After Jakarta, Surabaya is the second biggest city in Indonesia. Imagine massive ...
